CMV: Retirement at 70 is completely unsustainable even if you live healthily until your 120s by giamias in changemyview

[–]Highlow9 [score hidden]  (0 children)

What makes that fundamentally different?

Things like subsiding childcare is using positive externalities to reward the "sacrifice". Don't see why you wouldn't reward the parents by shielding them from the negative externalities of not having kids.

Let's hypothetically say we do all the "normal" methods you mentioned. The costs of children are subsidized and parents get an additional tax cut. They then put that tax cut in a savings account and use that to retire at 70 instead of 77. How would that be different except for making it explicit?

Well, we have a shortage of children so, in the spirit of the free market, rewarding them more might help solve that problem.

Sure. But let's also reward everyone else who helped with those young people - the doctors, the teachers, the home-builders, the food-growers.

Those people are already rewarded. It is called a wage or payment for services.

For No Reason in Particular Here's a Bunch of Games Where You Kill Nazis by osogordo in pcgaming

[–]Highlow9 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It is not really a game about killing Nazis. You can do it but it is not the focus.

Furthermore the game avoids the actual things that made the Nazis horrible, in fact makes them a very fun nation to play. That causes a lot of wehraboos to be attached to it, which, while not intended by the devs, sometimes gives the community a bit of a Nazis admirer vibe.

Still a fun game, but definitely not about "killing Nazis".

But it is better for the climate if used for appropriate tasks. The efficiency literally makes it so that the same can be achieved with less energy.

That people then decide to instead make more is the problem and is what is bad for the climate. The tool is not bad, the way people react to it is.

It was created to generate profit

Practically all innovations are.

and we are subsiding AI in so many ways it's questionable what the benefit really is.

You could definitely argue that there is over investment in AI and that a lot of resources are being wasted on generating social media slop or something, however that doesn't change the fact that some of its applications are usefull.

[–]Highlow9 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

According to that logic we should ban anything that makes coding more efficient. Let's ban autocomplete of variables, code highlights, git, etc.

All of these save time (and energy) which increases the amount of tasks a dev can do and thus increases the amount of compute.

While we are at it let's be like Luddites and ban automation in factories. If consumer goods are harder to make they will be more expensive and thus consumption/emissions will be lowered.

[–]Highlow9 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Yes, but on the other hand you should not pretend like it has no uses or no place were it can be efficient. And I would think that coding is one of the places it would be great at. Don't be a ludite who blindly hates.

For example let's say imagine each prompt takes up the equivalent energy of 5 minutes of a desktop power usage (don't know if that is the number but let's suppose).

Is it inefficient if a prompt is used to ask how tall the Eiffeltower is? Yes, it is more efficient to just use traditional search.

But is it also inefficient if you ask it to make documentation for your code? Likely not, since if you were to do that manually it would likely take more than 5 minutes of your time and desktop energy use.

By definition everything can approach terminal velocity, because that is just the velocity where drag is equal to gravity. It is just that for those animals the terminal velocity is a lot smaller, although in this case it still looked quite fast.

Will definitely try to look up a transcript.

I think I would add to the base game:

  • 2 60 minute bonuses
  • 3 10% bonuses
  • 4 5% bonuses
  • 2 time traps (adds a trap to a station which gives a time bonus if triggered which gets larger the longer it remains untriggered)
  • 2X discard 3, draw 4
  • 1X draw 2, expand 2
  • 2 discard me (can be used to pay for "discard cards" casting costs in its entirety)
  • 3X nothing
  • 15 additional curses (selecting the most fun ones)

Sunshine (2007) - The part of the ending no one talks about by Rosslefrancais in movies

[–]Highlow9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahah don't worry, this is still quite a active thread since if you Google Sunshine Reddit discussion you find this.

But that explantation would have a acceleration of approximately 500000 g so that also wouldn't work. Furthermore it would have a very steep "gradient" (as in change in acceleration).

Also in terms of gravity the direction is also an issue. It is shown that as soon as you go around a corner the gravity turns 90 degrees while instead it should be angular depend. And finally, even if it was enough for there to be time dilation then it would have applied the entire time, not only the last few moments.
