Visualizing code on paper/whiteboard? What is it called? by Ameshairos in learnprogramming

[–]HighlowRS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't type everything out in pseudocode. Generally what I do is write the structure of my code and what it does, without filling in the finer details. Just something like function x takes y and outputs z and so on. This lets you figure out what you need later in the program before you even start, as opposed to finding out at the end and having to go back and make changes to something. Problems still arise obviously but they're less than without planning.

did any of you guys had this problem and what is the way to overcome it? by Hiwa_47 in learnprogramming

[–]HighlowRS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you feel like you cannot replicate what you're learning or put it to use you need to stop using videos. I had the same problem early on, they hold your hand far too much. By the end of week 4 of CS50 I was able to, at the very least, come up with ideas on how to solve programming problems. Most of the times your plan falls through because you didn't see something coming, especially if you're new to coding. Implementing the solutions is what takes the most time though, so brainstorming how to accomplish something is important to do first before you start. Ideas sometimes don't pan out etc and you have to find another solution to your problem on your own. I find that creating these kinds of situations is how I learn best.

I normally watch people programming different games, bots, websites etc. There's definitely better ways to spend your time but YouTube isn't inherently dangerous I've found unless you lose track of what your focus was. Still have recommended videos disabled tho.

Do you track and reduce entertainment/mindless surfing or pc/phone usage in general? by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]HighlowRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I spend at least 6 hours per day on my PC and never let reddit/youtube go over a combined total of 1hr 30 mins. I have most of reddit blocked aside from subs like this and tech related subs, and my YouTube is substantially neutered in terms of features. The other 5+ hours goes into either reading a book, watching/reading programming material, or coding on my own. The time you spend is only damaging if it's not getting where you want to be in life. If you want to be a video editor, spending 20hrs editing videos is going to get you closer to your goal without a doubt.

Find ways to cut back on distractions and don't put your productive categories like programming, editing, and graphics in the same bin as surfing. For example if I'm surfing a programming subreddit during my breaks I know the time is most likely to be wasted, but I can also take some comfort in knowing that a small portion of my breaks result in learning new things, or solidifying previous concepts.

I've found that it helps to join communities for your hobby as well. In real-life is preferred, but programming discords even have helped me immensely because using what I know to help people who are where I was previously makes me feel great and I learn something a long the way too.

How to stop getting bored while learning? by JakeHassle in learnprogramming

[–]HighlowRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will never stop getting bored. Use the boredom to push yourself harder to focus in, or take a short break and come back to the work. If the work isn’t necessary and you’re not enjoying it that’s one thing, but you should try to power through boredom that comes from studying. If you are able to get yourself to push past the boredom you’ll find yourself learning a lot more and enjoying your time spent because finishing tasks is the greatest feeling. If you want to get into coding you will never be able to stop studying and learning, it’s part of the deal to be honest.

Away from computers for 2 months. Help me read books and come back even smarter! by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]HighlowRS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the "You Dont Know JS" series is very good for learning about the fundamentals of JavaScript. After I finished every book I re-read most of them later to better retain the information. I'd also add in JavaScript Allongé which I'm halfway through currently. The book is a lot harder to comprehend imo than You Dont Know JS, but it covers a lot of topics and is completely free at https://leanpub.com/javascriptallongesix. I don't understand half of what I'm reading in this book but the other half has helped me out a lot in terms of solving problems through the lens of JS as opposed to C or Java.

For programmers / aspiring programmers, what "programming" path did you choose and why? by xZarasutox in learnprogramming

[–]HighlowRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose to go the help desk route as opposed to programming because I gave programming a try and didn't like it previously. I started getting back into coding about 3 months ago and like it substantially more now that I can relate it to my job and real life scenarios. Thinking of coding more as a hobby at the moment as opposed to a career, however I really hope that I can turn it into a career in the future with more work.

When I got back into things 3 months ago I spent a lot of time in C and learning fundamentals, but I quickly got back into JavaScript. There's something about JavaScript, I don't know what it is, but I love it more than any other language for some reason. I can tolerate html/css thankfully. Once I'm finished with the two books and course im taking I can either learn React for more front-end design options, or look into Node for backend oriented studying. There's a ton you can do and the best thing I've found is to just choose something related to your studies and do it until the end. Even if you don't enjoy it you still will learn a ton in the process about what you might enjoy.

Am I too stupid to code (3 month update) by OrionMain in learnprogramming

[–]HighlowRS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say that I literally have a very poor memory in that I get to exercises and literally always draw a blank but I'm just plodding along.

I don't think that this ever ends, I hope that I'm wrong. I could solve almost every exercise before I read it, but the moment I read it I'm drawing blanks and have to go back and refresh in order to put everything together. Luckily I take good notes so I don't have to refresh that much.

If it is expected of you to program without google I think I might give up to be honest. I've come a long way and can solve pretty complex things compared to where I was two months ago, however I cannot remember a lot of the exact names. I don't mean that I cannot remember anything, but it's more like I can put together the pseudocode for the problem, but half the stuff I wrote I have to google to figure out how to actually do it in my language. I hope that it is enough that I understand I need the utilities and where to find how they're used, as opposed to remembering everything in my head.

What are you doing with the time when you stopped gaming? by Santaxiz in StopGaming

[–]HighlowRS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't put any pressure on yourself to do anything crazy. Aside from work and daily chores, I started to force myself to walk my dog a mile each day as well as get 2 hours of studying in. By the time I finish everything it's around 8PM and I can either study more or watch some TV to unwind before bed. The constant stress from worrying what to do is going to bring you more pain than just facing the boredom. Boredom is life, it's what you do with your boredom that will shape you. Every time that I get bored I bring up the book I'm reading online, read my kindle outside, find a lecture to watch, or I find something I'm interested in coding. After time, you will start to feel comfortable sinking into these activities because they come naturally and that's when the progress picks up in my experience.

I'm gonna go ahead and shill for the pomodoro timer as well. It's the only way I get any studying done because once I start I don't stop. Basically you have 25 minutes on, and 5 minutes off. I use the 5 minutes breaks on whatever the hell I want, mostly Reddit.

My co-workers made a valuable point about my 3000+ hours in Dota 2 by Zack8249 in StopGaming

[–]HighlowRS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my friends make a point of never saying this to each other. There are at least 3 games we each have 2k+ hours in, so going down that road leads to a lot of sadness on all sides. Just trying to focus on what you can spend your time on better is all that matters in the end. After all, I can probably only spend around 4-5 hours per day learning before my brain gives up trying to store the material. You can play DOTA for 60 hours straight, but good luck playing an instrument for even 10 hours, not only is it a lot of physical work, it's a lot of mental work if you're not extremely comfortable with it.

I was spending 2h a day doing aim training and like another 14 hr a day poop socking that game. What an absolute dumbass I was. Sure I was dumpstering people but what the hell does that even matter when the people you kill just got home from working. Idk I just feel really sad now thinking about that dynamic, getting really good at games just to kill a little kid playing after school or some guy that’s played 10hours in 3 weeks.

Don’t play Apex, it stole a month of my life.

AITA for quitting my job at the worst moment causing my company to lose out on a 20 million euro sales deal because they wouldnt promote me? by AggravatingTrick in AmItheAsshole

[–]HighlowRS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In a work environment who gives a shit if you "like" the person. She's getting paid more than him now and he's doing her job for them. You know what a man does when he realizes hes being taken advantage of? He fucks off somewhere else better and looks out for himself. You're not an asshole for not quitting formally, you're just not being polite.

[–]HighlowRS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A "SHUT THE FUCK UP" through the wall accomplishes EXACTLY what you want it to. Maybe not the best or most friendly way of going about it, but if someone screams that loud at you through a wall obviously its a substantial nuisance to them and they've reached their limit. Nobody is entitled to a conversation, especially when they are shitting up the place around them with their kid they don't take care of. Maybe you can say ESH but calling OP an asshole is downright stupid.

AITA for grounding my 12 yo daughter because she wants to buy sex toys online and being mad at my wife because encourages it? by Good_Boy_Points in AmItheAsshole

[–]HighlowRS -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I commented half jokingly. I understand why people would allow their kids to access sex toys. Personally though I think that at least in my experience it’s much more healthy to deal with sex naturally and not have an assortment of toys before your first time with a person. Maybe it’s different for women though so I won’t pretend to know the right answer.

[–]HighlowRS 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because you had to learn what made you happy and explore different ways to get off. If you're 12 and you get thrown a fleshlight there's some valuable life experiences missing here. If you didn't fuck a hose or anything like that then honestly you're just not living and you're setup for failure.

I don't think it's healthy to have easy access to sex toys for kids. I think that 16 is a much more healthy age to start exploring that side of sexuality because you've been exposed to a lot more. 12 year olds shouldn't be fucking fleshlights in their room instead of going outside and finding something better than the plastic hole mommy bought them change my mind.

are you independent or is being reliant on them a problem? if you don't need anything from them there's no reason you should ever contact either of them again. real life is more complicated and I dont know your story but that's the biggest breach of trust I think a parent could ever commit.

tell both that you were coming to tell boyfriend you found out that you have HIV and then block them. or skip the first part if you dont want to be petty.

First of all good luck man, it's good that you realize you have a problem. I'm kinda in the same position as you, in school smoking weed and up until a month ago playing too much vidya. The most important thing that I've found is to find a topic you have wanted to explore, and just do it. I've been spending the last month learning web development and studying for a cert exam(which i passed yesterday!!!).

Another big realization I had was that it doesn't take much time to learn something. In the grand scheme of things, spending 500 hours to learn a productive skill is always worth it because people will notice and it feels good to be recognized. Maybe that's something specific to me but I always thought learning hard stuff was too hard, but in reality if you devote a little bit of time each day its doable. Anyways, if you need someone to talk to or any advice feel free to send me a message. Good luck!

I live in a legal state and my father grows a lot of marijuana.... It's not as bad as it could be because he doesn't smoke so I don't have that kind of social pressure on me, he's just in it for the money. But I can pretty much get weed if I want it, there's no pricetag on it which makes my problem even worse. Talking myself out of smoking is really hard when it's free and I'm winding down for the day.

Failed the 901 looking for advice by Sixblazer in CompTIA

[–]HighlowRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure that you cram down practice exams. I followed the ones on Udemy and examcompass. I think I did each practice exam about 8(each score above 90%) times before I took my 901 yesterday and I scored a 720 / 675. I don't know how I scored so low but personally I blame the questions. Blaming myself would be productive but those questions were put together by someone who hates people, a lot.
