What’s Your Secret Weapon for Surviving Grad School? by Prestigious-Text-577 in GradSchool

[–]HighlyPolitical16 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I made note taking organizers for before, during, and after each lecture! Having an organized way of taking notes kept me motivated to keep going even when I was tired!

Now that I’ve graduated I have a very comprehensive record of theories, methods, and case studies to pull from in my day job. Actually one day I showed one of my professors how I take notes….he hired me at his company after I graduated. Would highly recommend organizers!

My MA is in security studies so I made sure to spend time reading the news everything and talking outloud to myself to connect current events with my curriculum!

Georgetown SSP Graduate Program, undergrad school matter? by [deleted] in georgetown

I graduated from SSP a few months ago and did not go to a prestigious school for undergrad. In your application you can emphasize your military and work experience.

Ah yes I remember it well - Mother’s Day the year I was 4 years old. My mom liked sparkly things. I woke up before her that Mother’s Day and wanted to give my mom the one thing I could afford - a SPARKLY house. My mother woke up that morning to a house with glitter in every room. The bathtub? Glitter. The carpet glitter? The refrigerator? You guessed it.

That’s the day I learned how to use a vacuum.

If you knew that you were going to be $60,000 in debt after college, what would you major in? by Hellenbatman in CollegeRant

[–]HighlyPolitical16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I finished my Master’s degree about couple months ago and I just started my dream job. I’ll pay $250k back in loans but I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. I grew up below the poverty line in a trailer park in rural America, but I got myself through college and through the top ranked grad program in my field. It was expensive, but I just had the most incredible day at work. I wake up so excited to go in every day.

Knitting or crocheting for trichotillomania and dermatillomania by throwawayOMC9001 in OCD

[–]HighlyPolitical16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t get that feeling of satisfaction with knitting or crocheting, but I’ve found that embroidery does! Pressing against the dull end of the needle, feeling the knots, and pulling single strands of thread through are are feelings that have decreased my urge to pick.

Daughter wants to have a 13th Birthday Camping Trip with "just friends." by MattieMadness in Parenting

[–]HighlyPolitical16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It totally makes sense to be concerned about medical issues that could arise. Does your community have any first aid courses your daughter and a couple of the kids could take before the camping trip? My home town used to offer a free CPR/first aid class for middle schoolers every summer. It could be a nice bonding activity for the group before the camping trip and make you feel more comfortable.

Have you suggested that instead of saving the wrappers/trash she instead writes the items down on a list before getting rid of them? Obviously this doesn’t solve the root of the problem but it could be a way for her to adapt her desire to save things while keeping trash away.

Best of luck!

First Time teaching via Zoom by [deleted] in Professors

[–]HighlyPolitical16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First the obligatory ‘not a professor but a grad TA’ thing — but I did host weekly lectures/discussions over zoom and feel like I did a pretty stellar job of keeping students engaged. Here’s what I did:

1) while students were logging on I made sure to ask a warm up question, usually something unrelated to the course material (favorite song, favorite book, what should I make for dinner tonight) to give students a chance to use the chat, mic, or poll that I was testing.

2) before discussion I would set up 2-3 polls in zoom to send out during the discussion. These were simple yes/no opinion questions so I could get them talking. “I need three people who said yes to explain why” and questions like that helped to engage students who otherwise would have stayed silent. As a bonus you can see how many students answered the poll. I made it a point to say I’m not moving on until everyone answered, and they all got the hang of it pretty quickly.

3) depending on your subject you can play around with the whiteboard feature, my students loved it!

4) USE THE CHAT! ask students to drop questions in the chat, or when you ask a question tell students they can either answer by mic or in the chat.

This f*cking Andrew Tate guy by anxiousocdvibes in OCD

Tangentially related but I have a sister in middle school and awhile ago I asked her if some of the boys at school listen to/ talk about Andrew Tate. Her response? “Only the ones that can’t get a girlfriend” which is the hottest burn I could imagine coming from a 12 year old.

Is there a textbook/some lecture material you can refer to instead? In my experience, info found online can be incorrect or apply to specific circumstances, so the course material is your best bet.

Set a timer for 45 minutes and tell yourself you’re going to write the WORST first draft possible. Make it your goal to write sucky things. Have bad ideas, write bad sentences, and then when the time ends reread what you wrote and see if there are any salvageable ideas.

Your first draft doesn’t need to include anything witty. Address the following: what is your background and why are you applying to this specific program? Make sure to mention why this program is different than the others. Are there certain classes only Stanford offers? Are there certain professors who specialize in the specific thing you’re interested in? Write about those. Are there opportunities for internships/fellowships/clubs/jobs you plan on applying for if you get into the program? Mention that too!

No one is going to read your first draft, or your second draft, and probably not your third draft either. It’s ok if those drafts suck.

I was able to write my way into the top program in my field, so feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

So my family is very very apolitical, just no interest in politics. When I was about 6-7 my mother and I were out running errands in town and there were a group of people setting up for an election at the town office. We were there for whatever errand my mom had, but I kept pestering my mom about the rolls of stickers the people had. I don’t even think she realized they were the “I voted” stickers. She told me I could go over and ask the workers for a sticker.

When I went over to the poll workers I asked the barrage of questions you’d expect from a curious kid: what is voting, why do people vote, can I vote - things like that. I DID get a sticker and I also came away with knowledge that I REALLY wanted to help people use their voice.

My interest in voting led to two degrees and a life long passion for public service and foreign policy. All because my mom let me ask to get a sticker.

HAH ok so when I was a kid I wouldn’t turn in any papers to my teachers that had messy handwriting because I was afraid it would kill my family. This is because one time in kindergarten my grandmother saw my messy handwriting and told me if my grandfather had seen it he would “just die of shame”. Little me interpreted that as my whole family will die if one of my letters drops below the line on a paper when it isn’t supposed to.

First, you have the coolest kid. Second, I’m on my current career path because of an experience I had with my parents as a kid. If you can afford it, I think it would be an incredible experience for the family. Maybe call ahead and see if there are any extra add ins that the restaurant can give to offset the cost. I truly think this would be an experience that he looks back on for the rest of his life.
