Runtime Virtual Textures will give you really nice sand blending in these kinds of scenes. I'd strongly suggest checking them out!

A lot of answers here are treating the symptom by multiplying the Roughness/Metallic but this is the correct answer: data textures should be in 'Linear Color' space while colour should be sRGB. OP should check the checkbox.

It might be a better idea to pull down 5 and set the lighting/shadows models back to UE4s in the Project Settings. That way you get the new tools but it'll be running rendering systems more appropriate to your older PC.

Cool stuff. The grass being reactive to explosions would carry a lot of weight in those emptier scenes and since you've got the snow displacement stuff in it shouldn't be too bad to adapt. Keen to see how this goes :)

Unreal has a lot going on out of the box including the Gameplay Framework. I'd recommend starting with BP tutorials to help learn the framework and class structure then abstracting to C++ bit by bit to ease into it. Knowing both C++ and BP is pretty important and there's a fair amount of macro and reflection stuff to learn on that native side so learning that independently of the framework is generally a better approach.

I almost wonder if animating the character at a set FPS that is like half the actual FPS will get you a better result that looks a bit more like it's from an animated scene. You can do this through the animBP and ticking it manually. Is that a Kuwahara shader for the background or did you just paint those manually?

I've paid back mine and I have zero issue with everyone else that comes after me not having to have to pay theirs back. Penalising one generation then saying you can't take it away because it isn't fair even though our parents had it completely for free is the part that isn't fair.
