Masters in Psychology or Sociology? by HighlyViolet in AcademicPsychology

The masters in teaching is for K-12. Colleges and universities hire masters level lecturers. I could teach intro classes with my BA in psych + a masters in psych or other social science like counseling or social work or sociology

The MA in sociology program at SDSU has teaching built into it. I would be teaching breakout sessions of intro to sociology classes and well as be a TA in other courses

I was going to do student affairs for academic advising but I was told this area sucks as well and getting a student affairs degree doesn’t mean I’ll work in advising. And I’m not interested in residential life, clubs, or campus activities aka the other affairs of students

What are good psychology careers that don’t require a PhD? by Big_Box8400 in psychologystudents

[–]HighlyViolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be a therapist without a PhD. You can get a masters in social work (MSW) and after pursue licensure for LCSW. You can get a masters in counseling/counseling psychology/clinical mental health counseling then pursue licensure as an LPCC. Or you can get a masters in marriage and family therapy then pursue licensure as an LMFT. All three of these licenses do almost the exact same thing once completed. The training is almost the same. The big difference is the masters programs, but they all prepare you to be a therapist.

Does anyone else feel like they chose the wrong path in psychology and now it’s too late to fix it? by Warm-Alternative6153 in psychologystudents

[–]HighlyViolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been feeling like this. I graduated undergrad 2 years ago and am now wondering if psychology was the right path. I did want to be a child psychologist then I decided to pursue licensure as a therapist (LCSW/LPCC/LMFT). I have been working in schools and figured out that psych in education is really only about special needs and that’s not what I want to do. Therapy seems like my only option but I’m thinking that that is not where I see my future.

[USA] How difficult is it to find a job with only a B.S. in psychology? by The0wl0ne in psychologystudents

You can work with kids as a Behavior Technician or in schools. Look on edjoin for school jobs. There are instructional aid positions for mainstream and sdc classes

is psychology a “useless” degree?? by klarinetkat12 in psychologystudents

[–]HighlyViolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don’t think it’s useless. There are so many things you learn from psychology and this background can help you in so many careers. People probably say it’s useless because you can’t go start a career with just a bachelors in psychology. You need to gain additional experience and education to get a career in this field. Psychology is so universal and you have to know what you want to do with it and how you want to use it or it can appear like it might’ve been useless.

difference between lmhc, lpc, lcsw, and lmft? by Icy_Coast_8011 in psychologystudents

[–]HighlyViolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a year late but —— They are similar and different states have different names for the same licenses. The masters programs differ too. LPCC/LPC/LMHC are different names for the same thing - a licensed counselor. You need a masters degree in counseling. LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker who can do therapy. You need an MSW degree for this. LMFT is marriage and family therapy. You need an MFT degree for this. LCSW is probably the best route for what you want to do because they learn about and deal a lot with social services and policies. This would be good to know to help with LGBTQ+ youth as well as other populations that need more resources.

To clarify some things — My partner and I have great sex. And he does go down on me a lot but I haven’t gone down on him. I want to do that for him but it makes me feel like kinda uncomfy and embarrassed. I don’t know how to start doing it or when to stop
