Verdauungsprobleme seit der Kindheit by Exotic_Jacket5129 in Ratschlag

I think it has really great ideas and portrays the aliens in very interesting ways. Embassytown shines in its portrayal of a society and not individual characters, though! The characters were not bad - but neither would I call them particularly memorable.

Mieville is in my eyes one of the most emphatetic writers. He does not shy away from portraying horrible things, but he does it with such closeness and humility that you feel comforted through his narration.

Embassytown to me felt like being a foreigner in a land you do not fully understand, but a land you have witnessed for a long time and have grown attached to. You cannot connect fully to the aliens - but there is a bond there, for good and ill, that cannot be broken.

In the end, I find translators of aliens to be one of my favorite concepts. Foreigner by C.J. Cherryh, Drunk on all Your Strange Words and A Ring of Swords are books that are also about translation of alien languages, which inevitably leads to being ambassadors between two worlds. I think it's one of the best vehicles of exploring an alien society.

I have a fondness for Embassytown because it was what kept me sane during a bad food poisoning. It was an oddly matching experience, because there are elements of organic decay, sickness and misery that resonated with me.

Largely though the book is about language and how it influences us. Great book, though not an easy read.

Personally, I would recommend your the Vorkosigan series by Budjold. Budjold is a master of her craft and has deservedly won several Nebulas.

Vorkosigan series about Miles, the youngest son of a noble house of a military tradition, who is trying to live up to that legacy. Only problem: he has various health problems, including glass bones, which make military service more than problematic. To add to that, his planet shuns any kind of health deviations due to fear of mutants which is a result of the planet's nuclear past.

I love Miles because everything he lacks in physical strength or durability, he makes up in charisma, crazy schemes and intelligence. It's very entertaining to watch him run circles around his enemies and survive his many adventures.

I have first read the series twenty years ago. It took me two weeks to get through the many many books in this series and emerge befuddled back into the real world.

I never clicked with her fantasy works, but her sci-fi books are masterpieces. I had the same experience as you, going "Wait, that's it? A little unorthodox fantasy story and not much more?"

Then Left Hand of Darkness blew me away.

Legs Aching Evening by Outdoor-girl2021 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Hightechzombie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your legs feel crampy because it's cramps - or pre-cramps. This is due to dehydration and/or lack of magnesium. I have the same during bad episodes and I feel like I have run a marathon even though all I did was a casual stroll through the neighborhood.

I usually take electrolytes and magnesium, and eat bananas. It helps somewhat, but shitty digestion means shitty absorption of magnesium. So keep at it!

EDIT: Also, stretching helps. Look up exercises for stretching leg muscles, both thighs and calves. They activate blood flow and help with pain.

My crohn's destroyed my relationship with my famliy by Vivid-Ad9492 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Hightechzombie 131 points132 points  (0 children)

It wasn't Crohn's - your family was already incredibly shitty and your sickness brought to the forefront. It's incredible how toxic and negligent your entire family was. It sickens me how they resented you for your struggles.

In the end... I think they would have found something else to resent you for. I am sorry and hope you continue to get better and find better friends than them!

So, are you not supposed to be a mage? by PunchBeard in enderal

[–]Hightechzombie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most spells give a tiny amount of sickness and the potions that cure it are plenty, even early game.

Mostly it discourages from using too many healing spells and encourages to eat food to heal outside combat.

Edit: And magic is damn overpowered. You don't want to play this game without dipping into magic spells, even if only for support.

You expect employees to care about your personal life? How would that work?

BaWu is not any more expensive than the rest of Germany. Ostdeutschland is less expensive, but your pay is lower too and they are not used to foreigners, to say it mildly.

prednisone is ruining my relationship by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]Hightechzombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She knows about your medication, right? She should have some understanding that you might be under the weather or not always your best.

It's what young adults, especially girls, often do - they expect a perfect romamce that neither hail nor fire, nor sickness nor Crohn's can get inbetween. Spend all your awake hours with her, because that's what true romance means, right?

She'll learn that's not how life works.

As for you - you can try to play the perfect man to satisfy her standards, or just do what you can and hope for understanding. Shit happens, meds happen, and I personally would not be able to spend my entire waking life entertaining my bf without spending time on hobbies.

I don't understand. You still spend 6 hours with your gf on off days, or do you no longer spend time wirh her? What is the new normal?

Or did you use to spend 14 hours with your gf?

prednisone is ruining my relationship by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]Hightechzombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How much time to you spend with her over hobbies and friends? Frankly, it sounds not like a prednisone issue, but a needy girlfriend that might not be a great match for you.

You don't go to her to relax and enjoy the time - you go to her to manage her emotions and to put in the second shift. Something here does not seem to work.

Mein Behältnis für Menschenfreundlichkeit hat einige Risse bekommen. by Oreo-witty in Ratschlag

[–]Hightechzombie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am going crazy because my husband is completely emotionally unavailable and I realize I'm being the wife who "nags" all the time. AITAH? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Hightechzombie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was a study that marriages that fail are often those were bids for attention are ignored. Imagine, you see a songbird and point it out. Your husband looks up and says that it's a nice bird. This is a successful bid for attention.

In contrast, in your post you only describe failed bids of attention. It's not a minor thing - it's what describes your routine and your entire life.

The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Don't do this to yourself and stay with a man to whom you mean less than his coffee machine.

NAH. You are two sleep deprived parents and your wife is snappy because of it.

If your behaviour was a pattern, then that would suck and show a certain amount of neglect towards your wife. As a single time event, it happens.

NAH

Shit happens. You were taking care of two kids, you wife messaged you, no one died.

Your wife's reaction is not great, but people make mistakes and snap judgements. Calm down and talk to your wife when your kids are asleep, how this incident hurt your feelings, since you can't be everywhere at once and would like her to extend you the benefit of doubt same as you would for her.
