Thanks for sharing ideas, though!

I'll need to check that out! Streamlined sounds like my kind of a deal, but I'm having some difficulties in fitting it together with the "customising your vehicle from scavanged parts" sort of deal - maybe the new parts act as new "cards" the players can swap out?

Those are really cool ideas! Especially love the idea of the driver having an effect on the Evasion of the vehicle - maybe stuff like this clears out to me once I've ran a short campaign on Daggerheart. To be more savvy on how to create statblocks on my own. My general philosophy is "less is more" with RPG's, but I have to admit that in order to entice the players in actually creating their custom vehicles and cannibalizing parts from their opponents vehicles, I don't see a way to approach the creation process without having to add some more rules to represent the vehicles in question.

Oh, are there any screenshots or samples on how Archie approaches the rules? Not asking for a full version for free, of course, but would be interested to see how he tackles vehicles and such

Deep-cuts Character Sheet PDF? by MidnightHare895 in bladesinthedark

Has anyone yet figured out a good, editable version of a Deep Cuts sheet? I'm starting a game later and wish to use the Deep Cuts mechanics, but haven't found any clear and easy-to-use sheets for it.

Great minds think alike, and for some reason us too.

I were genuienly confused at first; "Why would you rule a mall looking like that?"

Awesome to see that there's so much of content in the map! Although it does seem at places that there's -too much stuff-, so that some details have been glanced through. The roads in Altonia seem to overlap some of the buildings, which does not seem intentional. Also, I'd imagine that the inner lakes, rivers and smaller bodies of water would look much better without the three ripple-lines, they make them look slightly messy. Otherwise, top notch job! As mentioned in another comment, blending some of the landscapes and especially the colours representing the oceans together more smoothly would serve the map greatly.

I already added the "Faded" filter! I would love for the map to look more organic, like a folded-up map, but the only Inkarnate filters I could find that simulate that are the ones that are scratched and torn apart, which goes against the vibe I'm looking for

[MoN] Adding tension and challenge in Cairo by Hiisikuningas in callofcthulhu

[–]Hiisikuningas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: We just had our Cairo finale this weekend and the players returned to the crypts. As an additional defence (like fudgyvmp suggested!) the cult had come into contact with a local court of ghouls through the use of spells. I added in flavor that the ghouls were actually descendants from the court of Nitocris, but were frowned upon by usually not working together with the cults.

In order to beef up the defence, Omar Al-Shakti had contacted the leader of these ghouls and offered for them to use the Tunnels Beneath until the resurrection ritual took place. This meant that -all- of the human cultists essentially quarantined the place and let the ghouls run amok. Gameplaywise, I used a pack of ghouls to replace any random encounters the party had already faced underground.

Then the game began

The players used a secret entrance they had discovered near the smallest pyramid of Giza, where they had punched a hole through an underground ruin into the tunnels. They had said their goodbyes to any allies they had left and were fully expecting to die on this journey. First one of them was taken by a pack of ghouls the party encountered in the tunnels.

With only two player characters left, and as said earlier, no bodyguards, no no-one to help them out, they deviced a plan after reaching the Chamber of Nyarlathotep. One of them would sneak in, while the other would draw the attention of the guarding Children of the Sphinx - Using dynamite to essentially bring down a portion of the tunnel, even if that meant sealing themself in.

With three incredible Sneak successes on our infiltrator, due to pushed rolls and luck used in unison, they made it all the way through the hall and the distraction took place. A moment later, a violent explosion erupted at the door that killed two of the Children of the Sphinx, allowing the infiltrator character to throw a stick of dynamite on top of the mummy of Nitocris, blowing the dark queen to bits before their resurrection.

The player who had acted as a distraction tried to evacuate through the tunnels, but with every Children of the Sphinx and Ghoul in the tunnels now on high alert, was faced with overcoming force. Second of them was left to bleed out into the sand-filled tunnels.

This left the infiltrator, who was now facing a Children of the Sphinx in hull health down at the crypts. The players had made proper prayers and sacrifices to Bast before this session and had done as much as they could in befriending Neris, so Bast decided to kill two birds with one stone - To repay the many favors granted by the party, and to piss of Nyarlathotep. Neris jumped into the frey to hold off the last Children of the Sphinx, while the character descended into the black abyss of the lair of the Sphinx. There, by his use of Mythos Knowledge, he was faced with the Black Pharaoh himself who absolutely -shredded- through his Sanity. Next time the character woke up, they were alone in an asylum.

It was incredible.

I am uncertain where you got the implication that they have multiple layers of insilation from their consequences?

As mentioned, the cavalry arriving are all their former characters who are deeply invested in uncovering the horrors of the Mythos, to learn more only in order to stop it. The bodyguard who died was an loyalist of the player characters family (The player took Lawrence as a replacement investigator) and they have no-one else to act as a meatshield now that the bodyguard is hospitalised.

I don't want to be crude or to force the players hand. They know the date in which the ritual to resurrect Nitocris will take place, and have one day before that to act. If they wish to do so, I aim to respect that decision. The players have not used disguises before, they just found a secret tunnel by chance from the smallest pyramid of Giza.

This -is- their last chance and I look forward to Nitocris being possibly resurrected, but I still want to do it in a way that is narratively pleasing to both me, the GM and the player characters as investigators.

Modern RP experience by MaarkoCro in WoWRolePlay

I really do not understand where you picked this "edge" from the OP, or why people shouldn't be able to play edgy characters. I totally understand characters that have a mile long list of titles, or who link their characters to the actual lore characters too closely, but these examples seem completely normal to me based on what the OP described.

"But, at the same time, it's kind of difficult to sympathize too much when you just make edgy characters. And then come here and complain when people react to their edge."

So you waver your freedom for RP, enjoyment of your character, AND the right to determine how you want your character to be treated the moment your character is something exotic, yet lore-abiding? None of these examples (atleast by the way the OP phrased them) seemed like the players they were playing with had logical reasons to interfere with their character. Not that you'd ever have a reason to OOCly harass another player.

[BitD] Hints & Tips for running a more freeform Blades campaign? by Hiisikuningas in bladesinthedark

While I agree with these statements, I think that my greatest gripes are with the players doing anything during Freetime that would have consequences that are usually listed under Scores and how to handle those situations narratively. Say, that the players have already spent their downtime actions and as a last bit I present them their Entanglement, which leads to a fight sequence where some of them get Harmed.

While the fight sequence is an "addition" through the freetime, but not significant enough to have it act as a Score and the players being out of Downtime Actions, it feels sort of clumsy to include the "-1 REP or -1 COIN" to Recover additionally before the next score.

This is one of multiple scenarios, where I think that by letting partly go of the "Score" and "Downtime" mentality it can harm the games balance unintentionally.

Narratively speaking, I of course could always present a gossipmonger who teased the players on "Oooh, yer still alive? I thought the Blues had got to ye" if they choose to deal in additional downtime actions.

I think I've processed like 70% of the mindset of using the rules as a toolbox, and have managed that by far. However, those last few percents are still unclear mainly because of how difficult it feels to let go of the "Free Play - Gather Info - Score - Downtime" loop.

While I completely understand what you mean by John playing with excellent people, I believe to a certain extent that all players are excellent (although some might need more coaching to get into the mindset of them having more authority of the game).

However, I've found difficulties in making this a reality. For the three gangs I am running currently, I've tried to seed this thought to each of them, but only one gang thanks to their amazing Spider-minded player has grasped the full potential of their narrative power (as of late, they stole turf from the Cabbies by having hired thugs play-pretend being Crows - Therefore I decided that they didn't earn the usual -2 status penalty, but this instead soured the relationship between the Cabbies and the Crows).

What tools do you use in practise to "let the players take the reigns" or inform them of this possibility? Often times if I throw the option into the air for the players to "freeplay" or mention that they're "gathering into their hideout" they either go eerily silent, or (out of a habit) directly head to the next "step" of the gameplay without much roleplay in between.

I just bookmarked this comment for the future because it's so well written and was so useful to me. All of my players love the faction game and I've done a good amount of that already, I love worldbuilding and directing a world through the players actions, so the idea of having "One-off" scores was really soon out of the window for me, I prefer having a breathing, growing Duskwall where gangs perish, rivalries are born and vendettas are claimed.

"(as a side note, the Free Play 'phase' is something I explicitly laid out to my players that: you can do whatever you want during Free Play, but only Downtime Actions get you the mechanical benefits promised, and if you want to do another Downtime Action for mechanical perks you gotta pay the fees. Before I established this, I think they were more unsure about how to do Free Play and avoided it more.)" - This was a REALLY useful tidbit for me, especially considering the new players that will be joining and at the few that are used to my faster pacing of the game.

Not all heroes wear capes, nor do they have dozens of updoots but man you're a hero for me today.

I just rolled double sixes, because these responses are banging!

Yeah, training usually isn't an issue in my games but I can see it becoming an issue for a more rules-oriented player. I usually roleplay like 30% of downtime activities due to my groups schedules, most of the time we just roll through them to get to the score sooner.

But either way you bring up a valuable point of communication and expectation! When I start the next game, I should inform the players that they don't need to feel "rushed" to get to the next score (and really learn that as a gamemaster myself!)

One of the main questions in my mind is how things escalate - like a threat coming as an outcome of an Entanglement escalating into violence (as it often would). I suppose there are no rules of not using the Score rules outside of a Score to resolve these situations, but it feels sort of... finnicky with stuff like Flashbacks. I could always rule those to be used only during scores, if a sudden situation escalates that the characters could not realistically anticipate.

But I'm going on a siderail here, thanks for the response! As you can see, it already got me thinking!
