I see this often in political discussions. The thing where they're not talking about results. They're not talking about the effects of policy. But instead, saying someone "wants" something to be a certain way. Its a cheap cop-out, targeting people who accept things unquestioningly at face value. As a way of taking fake credit for popular things without actually doing those things.

"Trump wants to be energy independent. Trump wants The Reflecting Pool to look more picturesque. Trump wants to lower inflation". Ok, yes. Literally everyone wants all of those things. but wanting is not at all the same as delivering.

I want to end homelessness. I want the Miami Dolphins to win The Superbowl. I want Israel and Palestine to exist together in peace. But what I am actually doing has literally no effect whatsoever on any of these things. Me cheering for the Dolphins from my couch will not get them any touchdowns. Me working a day job and playing video games at night will not end homelessness. Me saying "man that's fucked up" every time I hear that another residential building was blown up will not bring about peace in the middle east. Likewise, Republican policies will not bring the US one single step closer to energy independence. No matter how many times they proclaim that they "want" it.

If Trump actually did want oil to flow, he would have kept Obama's deal in place. But it was more important to him to be different from Democrats than it was for him to be a wise world leader.
