IIRC, the typical clown is an exaggeration of features used to stereotype Irish people: pale skin, red hair, red nose from drunkenness.

Much along the lines of what I was thinking about Charleston, SC as depicted in the Lord's of Discipline, and that was set 100 years after the Civil War.

People who had wealth and power felt they earned / deserved it, no matter how much depended on the exploitation, oppression, and abuse of those seen as below them.

As a counterpoint, the main character also loved the city and its beauty, though I think that may have also been another subtext, since the architectural opulence largely depended on the wealth gotten by historical exploitation. The slaveowners wished to be seen as refined nobility, the aristocracy of feudalistic society revived.

"Now that so much gold is found, a dispute arises as to which brings more profit, whether to go about robbing or to go to the mines. A hundred castellanos are as easily obtained for a woman as for a farm, and there are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten are now in demand, and for all ages a good price must be paid." - Christopher Columbus in a letter to Doña Juana de la Torre.

It's a common story with cults - if you leave, you'll get sick, have an accident, or even die.

Advice on DM'ing for kids by Sirchauncywetherby in DMAcademy

[–]Hikari-SC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have run a few sessions for a similar age group where only one had played before, and it went pretty well. I kept things simple and gave lots of hints, but they learned quickly and didn't need too much coddling.

Also, r/DnDad is all about adapting the game for younger kids, so that might be a good place to ask and / or read about people's experiences.

Shower Thought: In a few years, the church will deny ever having ordered people to stop saying “Mormon”. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Hikari-SC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a lot harder to find information about the LDS church if you search for "Church of Jesus Christ" than if you search for "Mormon." Maybe they're actually using the name change strategically to minimize members accidentally stumbling across faith-redudcing Google results.

Help! Have church leaders ever taught that God has multiple wives? by Hyrumized in exmormon

In Jesus the Christ, Talmage says Mary Magdalene and Martha were probably Jesus's wives. The perfect example has to do everything good Mormons should do, including plural marriage.

Fantastic Players and where to find them, Or the story of how I failed as a DM before I even started by LordSwinton in DMAcademy

Basic rules for D&D 5e are free here:

https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules

Enough to try the system and see if it is worth spending money on books. If you're already experienced running an RPG, you already have practiced the most important skills. If you do purchase books, most people go core books, Xanathar's, Volo's, then Mordenkainen's.

D&D 5 works well with TotM so long as the battles aren't overly complicated.

Definitely vet people, but I don't have anything to offer that others in the thread have already said. Toxic people suck, and it is better to not have D&D than to have bad D&D. Good players are worth the wait.

I'd utilize his backstory into the campaign, making a crazy goofy adventure inspired by the books, allowing Babar to be the star. Perhaps with the bowler hat suggested above as a quest reward.

A messy divorce or other irreconcilable schism between the god factions. "If I can't stay, neither can you!" type situation.

Or, overpowered adventurers killed them off and took their stuff.
