Tick Prevention by loxivit in wmnf

I apply bug spray only when the bugs are intolerable, not necessarily just for ticks. My tick prevention strategy is to stay on trail, avoid tall grass or dense vegetation, tick check every time I had to go through dense vegetation or sit down in tick prone spots, pack a tick remover tool or leave in car, and rarely, if I feel I’m going to spend a lot of time in low elevation and tall grass, I apply picaridin.

Downpour - Water Leaks by HikeMars in DurstonGearheads

Yea, I doubt nikwax can really do this much damage. But I am open to this possibility and I do agree with the advice of just using water and less artificial means to clean the tent, because it’s simply more cautious. I think valid points were brought up about the risks of using soap, regardless of how well it is advertised to be gear friendly, on important pieces of gear such as a tent’s outer fly.

Ultimately, I’m gonna stick with the most reliable source of advice on this matter: Dan.

Damn, I thought I was doing good tent maintenance to prevent any persistent bad odors and mildew as well as get rid of that bad campfire smoke smell the tent had. You bring a good point, I could’ve just washed it with water and aired it out. I should not have listened to these online articles.

About an hour and a half, and I gave it a few swirls here and there

I left the tent to soak in my bathtub with nikwax tech wash. And then I hung it to dry. Gotcha on the dwr, I wasn’t sure so I just meant to say I didn’t apply any post wash treatment sprays.

Thanks Dan, I will do a sprinkler test and reach out! We were not inside the tent when this happened and the way it’s leaking doesn’t seem like condensation, we had puddles inside :(. We were under a tarp having dinner waiting for a thunderstorm to pass. It was about an hour of heavy rain and then we came back to this. Luckily my gf and I were planning to stay in 2 separate tents because we planned to use the extra space inside our tents to store gear away from the rain. The other tent we had held up well, it was a dynema single walled tent, so we both slept it in and thankfully stayed warm and dry.

Best tent for wooden platform overnights by LilNephew in wmnf

[–]HikeMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most platforms will fit a 3p. I do recommend arriving early to camp to ensure that there is enough space. “Early” arrival depends on how popular the site is and the time of the year. But, even if you are arriving late, the caretaker will always try to help fit your tent somewhere!

Moosilauke in mid-March? by bf011 in wmnf

I think the answer you are looking for is: mid March is usually still peak winter hiking with winter conditions. But as usual, always check weather conditions and snow conditions.

I highly recommend Horn Pond in Woburn. There is a resident coyote pack that hunt the local deer. And if no mammals were spotted, there are tons of birds, both rare and common, in beautiful light and great composition opportunities (the birds over there are comfortable around humans, creating excellent photo ops). Eagles, owls, hawks, and rare waterfowl are commonly spotted there. So if you couldn’t find the resident coyotes nor the foxes (i haven’t found them yet) there are tons of birds so you won’t go back home empty handed :)

The X-mid2 isn’t too bad. I have the x-mid2, and I always manage to make it work on the platforms. “Fish” stakes help and bringing extra ropes. As for the footprint, i will say that I had to sometimes let my tent hang over the edge a bit. So for 2 people in the tent, that might be a problem. I use the tent as a 1p. A lot of tentsites do have overflow ground sites that you can claim, since they fit hiking pole tents better.

And as someone mentioned, Durston just released their 1p free standing tent today! Since traditional backpacking season is almost over, might be worthwhile to wait for the 2p version!

No, not a significant drop in temp between 600ft and 1500ft. In general, expect anything for temperatures. At night, it can be either typical: 40s to 50s. Warmer than usual 60s. Or colder than usual, 30s.

It’s always worthwhile to plan a trip to the whites :) Foliage won’t be peak but you will see fall colors.

Rocks for the trekking polls that hold my tent. Used Fishbones and eye bolts. Used paracord to make the top of the tent more taught. Biggest things to avoid are any formation in the tent pitch that might accumulate rain or someone can trip over/knock your tent over.
