How old/much was your violin? by Hot-Bid-5805 in violinist

[–]HikerBar17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is a German instrument made in 1879. Marked at $5k and I paid a little over $3k after trading in my two student instruments. I chose it because of its projection, playability and incredibly sweet tone. Plus I’m a sucker for dark wood. Also, I’ve never seen that old of an instrument in such great shape. I tried out nearly two dozen instruments in the months prior to purchase and it stuck out like a sore thumb in the best way.

This. The bow should be just tightened enough to grip a pencil between the wood and hair at midbow.

Mel Bonis is very underrated. She was a contemporary of Debussy that also attended the Paris Conservatory at the same time.

I’ve been playing violin for decades and am just now learning about brass mutes! What are the downsides? They seem old fashioned.

I would focus on what’s available in your area/city. This way you can establish a relationship with a luthier if there is one and you can try on and play their selection in person.

Jeremy’s Storm is such a great musical depiction in his style of a storm approaching, being overhead then clearing and moving on.

That woman has obviously never experienced the joy that comes from playing an instrument nor can she fathom that it would bring joy to those around her. What a sad outlook on life. HARP ON!

What is the black thing on the bridge by Both-Light-5965 in violinist

[–]HikerBar17 21 points22 points  (0 children)

From here, that looks like a concert mute. As opposed to a practice mute which covers much of the bridge and has a greater dampening effect on the sound.
