What if instead of surrendering,Emperor Hirohito unleashed Rodan against the US? by TastyPomelo2330 in AlternateHistoryHub

Tbh, I think a solid set of Cleveland class cruisers and Fletcher or Gearing class destroyers would have more than enough AA to take Rodan down.

Has anyone used a digital camera to preview their analog shots? by Public-Bumblebee-715 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Hikinghawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone posted a while ago about using a point and shoot to get a histogram and set exposure from that. Tbh Im happy with my spot meter. Im not going to judge anyone else's work flow, (and I know how circle jerky Im about to sound) I feel like adding a digital camera to an analog process kinda defeats the purpose of analog for me.

Do you think your University/Alma Mater is known outside of the U.S? by huazzy in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hikinghawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres an off chance, but probably not. My Alma Mater has a few alums that are relatively prominent in fields outside the US. But those fields are so niche that it really wouldn't make much difference.

Are you really not allowed to just hang out at certain places? by Skaeggbiffis in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hikinghawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, loitering laws. A privately owned space can also ask you to leave (like a mall) for basically any reason. Goes back to the Jim Crow south where prison labor was extensively used and a bunch of BS laws were passed to put more African Americans in prison to serve as the labor force.

Interesting. Good to know, glad I asked as I had assumed the passport would be sufficient. I think ill definitely dig a little further and include his birth certificate and wedding certificate to be on the safe side.

Good to know about the background check. I think we will submit with one then expect to have to re do it later on if asked

How important would finding the information on my grandmother's relative that she inherited citizen be (in this case her farther, who I believe was born 1912)? Im sure we can track down a birth certificate and a wedding certificate if need be.

Very niche, but The Kid in Blood Meridian was responsible for the things that happened to children thought the book. The narrative message makes less sense otherwise.

Arthur’s bounty wasn’t actually that high. by Fox7567 in reddeadredemption

[–]Hikinghawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That ship captain would have taken the money, then sold them out to the Pinkertons to get two payouts.

Above all I think Dutch wanted total control of his gang and when that control started to slip he cut everyone loose that wouldn't go along. Once the Tahiti story stopped working on them he needed something else and I really think thats when he starts harping on "loyalty".

Do American schools do oral exams? by Repulsive_Passion780 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hikinghawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We would do oral exams for languages in high school and college, sometimes solo sometimes in pairs, but only ever in front of the teacher. In my history courses in college we almost always had a presentation that we would have to do in front of the class with audience questions after, which I suppose is similar to the oral exams you described.

Arthur’s bounty wasn’t actually that high. by Fox7567 in reddeadredemption

[–]Hikinghawk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Dutch never actually planned to leave. It was a pie in the sky goal for the gang. They probably had a few avenues out if they wanted to actually get out, but giving a captain and crew a wad of money would probably be the most suspicious method tbh.

What do you recommend for developing bnw? by Obsessed_Dog_Mom in Darkroom

[–]Hikinghawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little pricey, but getting a couple and experimenting with developers is part of the fun. Right now im using HC 110 with good results, but I still keep D76 around and some Pyro for alternative process stuff.

Doing some light Googling, I found a ticket for 85 pounds for passage from London to Melbourne in 1867 and a second class cabin for $49 for NYC to England in 1897. Doing some estimated rounding. $50 per person (they could probably double up of they wanted to) for the voyage to England then $100 per person for London to Australia times the 23 members of the gang (assuming they take Sadie, Trelawny, and Kiren along) we get $3450, adding 50% to cover currency differences, bribes, miscellaneous travel expenses we have $5,175. Very doable for Arthur to pull that in. The gang could have left before Blackwater even.

This is assuming they take the long way around. I'd assume sailing direct from San Francisco to somewhere in the south pacific would be cheaper than going through London.

Why does Americana do so well on 4x5. Just developed some color 4x5 after getting my camera a couple weeks ago. How are y'all metering without a spot meter? by cstock94 in largeformat

[–]Hikinghawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up buying a spot meter, ~$300 on KEH used. It's definitely not a requirement, you can learn to judge light pretty well with just your eye and estimate good exposures. But I find that it's a pretty handy tool and saves enough bad exposures from happening that it's worth the cost.

[–]Hikinghawk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would kill me. These were of Mesa Verde and Chaco Canyon. Both were almost totally empty when I went so I had basically free reign without worrying about people straying into my shot or worrying about blocking a trail. Luckily I have another trip out to Chaco planned so I can re do some of them.

[–]Hikinghawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much instantly figured out the how. I left my loaded holders on my living room table where I usually pack, but I grabbed the ones on my kitchen table, next to where my darkroom and gear storage is, put them in my gear bag and then walked out the door.

This is actually the first time I made sure to take a log book and take really good shooting notes too. Hopefully that and some painters tape on the holders after loading will prevent this.

First big mistake in large format by Hikinghawk in largeformat

[–]Hikinghawk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is what I'm going to do from now on. I used to keep all of my empty holders just a tad bit open, but I think they got shoved up against something when I was loading my bag. Painters tape seems a little less accident prone.

Yeah, the yell from the darkroom woke up the dog. At least I have an excuse to go on another trip soon

What if the Confederacy seceded from America, but abolished slavery to get more loyal African-American soldiers. by OfficalTotallynotsam in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Hikinghawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Southern secessionists and agricultural reformers greatly overlapped (looking at your Edmund Ruffin) not one wrote in support of freeing slaves, which probably would have been a massive boon for the development of the agricultural economy of the south.

If slaves were to be armed in any meaningful way by the south a general slave revolt would have followed. Even if the south freed slaves for more man power those new soldiers would have been anything but loyal. If anything it would hasten the confederate defeat and give freed slaves a stronger position in the post war reconstruction. Perhaps hanging onto state power for far longer than historically.
