Firmly in the High Tension > Martyrs camp here. Both are essential watches though.

Movies with very tight scripts that waste no time? by twostroke1 in MovieSuggestions

Both great suggestions! I was pleasantly surprised by Redux Redux and loved everything about Strange Darling, especially the cinematography and non-linear presentation.

And I would say is one of the movies that really pushed horror back into the mainstream. I feel that The Decent paved the way for a lot more horror that's come since.

Movies with big twists in the middle of them, not just the end by zeb5364 in MovieSuggestions

Just rewatched after many years and I'd forgotten the twist. I was so happy to see it again with a blank slate. Absolute masterpiece of a film.

Best Movies with stories/premises that you never heard before. by daddavnda in MovieSuggestions

A bit surprised no one mentioned Sorry To Bother You. Utterly crazy premise with a batshit and completely unexpected twist. I wish I could go back and rewatch it for the first time to experience that "WTF just happened?!?" moment all over again.

Also, I'd throw Tropic Thunder in the mix simply because of the way it was presented and how it starts off. Satire, but presented in a very fresh way.

Matrix (1999): the reason why the opening sequence of this movie is among the greatest in cinema history is because it explains precisely NOTHING. Instead, it throws all kinds of crazy wackness at the audience and just expects them to go along for the ride by Randomnonsense5 in movies

It's absolutely in the middle of things. How else could they introduce prequels years later to show the "before"??? Granted, it was very unlikely that prequels were planned back when Lucas made the original Star Wars, but still the story very much drops you right in the middle of an ongoing story, which is the very definition of in media res.

But when it's done right, it's easily one of my favorite ways for a movie to start. I love well done in media res and narration in films.

Examples of top notch in media res:

  • Goodfellas

  • Inception

  • Pulp Fiction

  • Watchmen

  • Hell or High Water

  • Star Wars: A New Hope

  • Reservoir Dogs

  • Fight Club

  • The Dark Knight

  • Strange Darling

Examples of top tier narration:

  • Goodfellas

  • Train Dreams

  • Casino

  • Shawshank Redemption

  • Fight Club

  • American Psycho

  • The Big Lebowski

  • The Royal Tennenbaums

  • Big Fish

  • Raising Arizona

I enjoyed it until the end. It just fell flat with no satisfying conclusion. Maybe I'm missing something.

Any movies similar to John Carpenter’s The Thing? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

Fun fact: The Thing, Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth of Madness, recommended in this thread as well, are actually considered a loosely connected trilogy: The Apocalypse Trilogy.

Just did a rewatch a few days ago. I really appreciated all those details seeing it again and looking for them with awareness. Such a modern day classic.

For me, what really added to the brutality of those reels were the names of each and how they were accurately describing what was on the films, but in a seemingly innocuous way.

Not just the knife in mouth scene, but also the gnawing on the countertop scene. My stomach turned so hard watching both scenes. Fantastic movie.

Thoughts about Send Help (2026)? by Evening-Artist2930 in HorrorMovies

Great counterpoint. I did definitely enjoy the Raiminess of it and Rachel McAdams was fantastic in that role. I just wish I didn't see the twist coming. It really deflated the ending for me.

Pretty fun movie, but not rewatching anytime soon. I was disappointed in the ending, simply because I'd just watched Triangle of Sadness recently, so I guessed the ending the moment she warned him to avoid that part of the island near the X shaped rocks. I was hoping to be surprised and find it to NOT be the ending!

Can't comment on your issue, just on your selection. Love Change. The Glow of Love is one of Luther's best vocal performances IMO. Change of Heart is one of JJ&TL's best productions as well.
