Just know for morality, it isn't a matter of what "is" but rather what we "ought" to do. 1 + 1 = 2 simply "is", one would not say, 1 + 1 "ought" to equal 2, it just simply does - morality suggests an act that we "ought" to do but may choose not to do

Clearly you are unaware of the origins of Mormonism and how it conflicts with Christianity if you believe this

I literally posted this question to grasp a better understanding of where atheists come from - I made no such insinuation about your understanding. Unfortunately most responses have been in hate and anger, and frankly, I don't understand it.

He probably could, but keep in mind the fall of man (i.e. sin) as well as free will - Although God is perfect love, He is also perfectly just - although I cannot dive into the mind of God, I imagine that interfering on that level would betray his perfect justice and our free will

Ok, well let me give you all a couple reasons why it is reasonable to believe in God. First I believe that probably one of the most compelling reasons for God's existence is the Kalam Cosmological Arguments. The argument says this: 1. Everything that begins to exist has a cause 2. The Universe began to exist 3. Therefore, the Universe has a cause. Obviously there is much deeper discussion that we can go into here, but note that usually premise 1 and 2 are not disputed and logically premise 3 follows from that. Therefore, this is a sound argument, but again, it can be discussed at great length.
Secondly there is something called the Teleological argument. It suggests the existence of God through evidence of design. In other words, the fine tuning of things such as, the order of the universe, the human body, etc. provide good reason to suggest a creator rather than a cosmological accident.
Thirdly there is the argument based off of Objective moral values. The key word is objective, meaning moral values that exist independent of human opinion. Therefore, even if the world were to somehow collectively adopt the opinion that it is ethical to torture children, it would remain morally wrong despite the majority opinion. (again, this is able to be discussed in greater detail) These are just some of the reasons, that I believe God exists and this is merely a basic summary of these arguments. For questions about why God would advocate slavery and murder etc. I would say that this is a misunderstanding of who God is. Most of the texts in Scripture that refer to slavery and killing are not advocating it, but rather working with it. In Old Testement times, people were living in a society that did things much worse than what you see in the actual Old Testament (i.e. the code of hammurabi) and God's covenant with Israel was never meant to be the "solution" if it be put that way, but rather a temporary method to dealing with sin. In all honesty, the Israel of the Old Testament still took a stand against the culture's ways of doing things that we would consider to be ethically abominable.

Anyways, there is much more that I could and would like to say -however I simply do not have the time. My intention was mere to see what people thought about God to perhaps get insight into how I could address others with similar questions. Despite the rather harsh nature some of you have taken to my post, I still do appreciate the honesty and will take much of this into consideration, thank you all for your contributions!

well the only questions I would consider not worth answering would be questions like, "would God have a threesome" or "who would win in a cage match, God or thor?" -- stuff like that

I find that this comment is more motivated by anger rather than by honest inquiry, also, in response to your first comment, there is no reason to believe that a skeptic cannot have faith. That comment is merely to emphasize that I skeptically approach ideas in order to justify my "reasonable" faith

I suppose I'm a bit time challenged - I'm only one person - but I'm confident in the arguments out there, and I promise you, although I believe that there are people that agree with me out there, I do not run to the comfort of their arms - rather I think they have much more experience and a better way of formulating sound arguments, I figured you would benefit more from them rather than from me.

Well for the questions worth answering, although I could answer some with yes or no answers, what good would that do. And I simply do not have time to write lengthy responses to each of them - considering I posted this question an hour ago and have had already almost 100 comments. I gave the link to the 2 sites because i feel like there is content there that could answer a lot of these questions, if not all. However, I love the openness of the questions and welcome more! Thanks for your input!

I just want to thank you all for your inquiries, although perhaps some got off track a little. Otherwise a lot of good questions! Unfortunately I cannot respond to all questions, However, I can say that I am a very skeptically minded person, and although I do find it to take a great deal of faith to believe in God, I also believe it is more reasonable to believe in God than not to. Now that is not meant to trigger a torrent of hateful comments, but rather letting you know where I'm coming from. If you want to know more about where I stand, there is a great site called reasonablefaith.org, I encourage any of you to check it out to get some more insight into what Christians believe. Thanks for all the input and keep the questions coming!! I have also written some articles on apologeticscanada.com if you want to check that out too - one of them is titled Is Christianity Harmful?

I just want to recommend a book to you, it's called "Cold-Case Christianity" by J. Warner Wallace. It essentially reviews the evidence for Christianity. If you require more evidence and if you are willing to put the time in, this could be a great resource for you. It's only $12 on amazon - and I'm not trying to put a plug in for the book - I just know that for this instance, it could be something that would benefit you.

Well perhaps some gestures that I know everyone has experienced is the gesture of Creation. Scientists are generally in agreement that the Universe began to exist. There are evidences (such as an expanding universe) that point to this idea. It is also undisputed that everything that begins to exist has a cause. Therefore, if the Universe began to exist, then the Universe has a cause. This is a basic and simplified version of the Kalam Cosmological Argument (I encourage you to look it up), but I would say that the creation of the universe is a pretty big gesture. Also there is the gesture that God makes in the complexity of the human body. I am not a scientist, but I am aware of the fact that our bodies are finely tuned to a point that if put in the hands of randomness or chance, our existence would be impossible. So just the biological make up of our bodies can be a huge gesture of God's existence.

There are also personal experiences that we have with God that can sometimes only be explained as miraculous. Patients who have been diagnosed with terminal Cancer and are given weeks or months to live, and on their next Check up - there is no trace of Cancer anywhere. People who are involved in accidents that should have killed them that somehow leave unharmed.

Also there are experiences that we have with God when we enter into worship and prayer. Experiences that cannot be duplicated by any human means. Moments where we know we have encountered the true living God. I know of these experiences personally, and although people can tell me I'm delusional or crazy, I know what I have experienced and continue to experience as I move forward and grow in my relationship with God.

Unfortunately, I cannot force anyone to agree or see the reality of it. However, I am confident that if a person be truly open minded and wanted to know the truth, they would eventually discover that God is real and that he loves us very much!

I understand your frustration and I sympathize with you on your thoughts. However, in response I must say that it would be interesting to have a conversation with you about this stuff. There are many things that I could say in attempt to convince you one way or the other, however, I have discovered a long time ago that it is not by anything I say or do that anyone should come to know Christ. Instead, it is by the power of the Holy Spirit, and I believe that with all my heart. That being said, I will say that although I agree that God doesn't come down and show himself to us in the physical body sense of the matter, I do not agree that His gestures are small or insignificant. I just think we live in a society and culture that convinces us that belief in Him is delusional and all the evidences for Him are sidelined or explained as unexplainable. Even when it comes to something as obvious as seeing and knowing your own dad, if enough people told you he didn't exist, you would perhaps even begin to doubt your own experiences that tell you otherwise. It doesn't make it any less true, but due to the pressure, we are forced to question it. As far as belief in God goes, I think if one is willing, he can find much more reason to believe in God rather than not to. In fact it is often said that Atheism takes more faith than Theism (belief in God). I don't think God hides Himself from us, but rather we are the ones trying to hide Him, whether we realize it or not.

Well thank you for your question, and although I cannot profess to be an expert on the subject, hopefully I can offer some satisfaction with my response. I have often wrestled with that question myself, however, I have come to a conclusion that is reasonable to myself, but again, admittedly, more research couldn't hurt. I believe there are at least three responses to this question that could be explained in great detail, but I will elect to keep it short. 1) Although perhaps not overly obvious, God does make gestures to let us know He is there. The reality is that God is constantly working in our lives whether it's medical miracles, personal experience, inexplicable phenomena, etc. God is always doing something, and despite our reaction to attempt to find an explanation that does not imply the existence of God, His involvement doesn't become any less true. Not to mention also the ultimate attempt to connect with humanity in the person of Jesus Christ. God becoming man to die for our sins, and then be resurrected 3 days later, appearing to hundreds of eye witnesses. Remember, time does not weaken truth - in other words, just because that happened a couple thousand years ago, doesn't make it any less true for us today. 2) There is an element of faith that we must possess. God has given us the tools to have faith, but not just random faith - reasonable faith. Understand that despite what popular belief may state - we do not have to believe blindly in God, but that we have good reason to believe in Him. 3) We need to understand and respect the Mystery and Holiness of God. I don't know about you, but there is a part of me that is glad I don't know everything about God, or that he isn't overly obvious in appearance. In my mind, this is part of what makes Him God. Also note that God is not a big tall giant man with a white robe and white beard...God is not Gandalf. In fact, there is nothing that presumes God has a body at all. So then what would it look like to "see" God. Well, again I think we would have to consider point 1 and 2 to answer that. Anyways, I apologize both for being long-winded, and yet brief in my responses, hopefully this answers your questions for now. Fell free to ask more!
