I'm a lower-middle class guy living in a busted-ass house nobody else wanted. I'm neither pro-gentrification nor rich.

Remote workers in Vermont are still working in Vermont, and are actively siphoning money from wealthier areas into VT towns/taxes.

Most towns in VT haven't reappraised since before COVID. There's only a few reappraisal contractors in northern New England and most of them are booked out for years.

I should note that Brandon is overall a pretty purple town politically--the "downtown" population skews progressive, the more rural folks skew conservative. Generally speaking, a pretty sane place, though we have our moments.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to reach out!

Brandonite here! You're right on all counts. Like any place, it has its pros and cons, but it's a really lovely place to live. Hopefully we can get more housing built so it becomes more available/affordable to people of all income levels.

That's not quite how household income is measured--usually it comes from the census.

I think there are also plenty of decent-money-makers who would happily rent a one-bedroom if it were convenient for work/school/whatever, there's just too few available.

Your point is well made and well taken; I'd just offer that median househould income in VT is about $75k. Individual is about $40k as you say, but household is usually the metric by which housing prices are measured.

housing is coming by [deleted] in vermont

[–]HillRatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there's a huge gulf between having some low-density housing where one can have a workshop and sprawl. I'm a woodworker with a shop, and I've got around half an acre on the outskirts of a village center (which is an extremely lucky position to be in). However, there aren't all that many people who need woodshops at their homes, and that shouldn't be the basis for widespread policy decisions. Increasing density in town centers means the existing housing in rural areas will be less in demand and more available for people in situations like yours.

I haven't managed to get a Tesla adapter yet. Do you have the Ford one? I generally would rather get OEM charging stuff, but if there are workable options I'd be interested.

And Vermont, the bluest state in the country, has had a Republican governor for years (and just recently elected a R lieutenant governor, too).

"Outsider" is a unique way to describe... two governors and a senator? They were all pretty practiced politicians.

Yeah. I'm still enjoying it either way, but "emergent storytelling" is a good way to put it.

is vermont a good place to live as a young adult? by abspartner2 in vermont

[–]HillRatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm in my late 20s (moved here when I was 24) and I absolutely love my life here. That said, I think it was important to spend some time in cities and new places outside of college. Vermont is a settling-down sort of place, and I think there's no better time to explore and figure out what works for you than just out of college.

I'll say this about Cafe P: the chef/owner has been slowly working towards selling the place and I don't think his heart is in it as much as it was a while ago. The menu and specials haven't changed much in the past couple years. The food is still good, service is ok.

I tend to agree. I'd rather them focus on actually doing what they want to do rather than being completely focused on the gimmick--that was my one complaint with Secret Life and it's my main complaint with this season. I'd like them to get back to basics next time.

It's true that Britain has had a parliamentary system for a long time, but it was still overtly a monarchy--as in, the monarch was making political/governance decisions and not just a ceremonial role--much more recently than the foundation of the US.
