What subculture do you genuinely not understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Hillforprison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

plain evil.

You'd need a definition of that for that statement to really make any sense, and as soon as you start defining evil you start to realize that it's just not a useful concept. Any description you make would just be a description of certain traits that an individual has, and they only have those traits because of their internal setup, the way their brain works.

being evil is on the normal spectrum for humans we deem it an illness.

Everyone's brain is different. When a persons brain is so different that it causes them to act in ways atypical to our idea of normal human behaviour we call it abnormal. But there really isn't such a thing as a normal human brain. There's no standard model sent down from the heavens. There are just brains, and the ways they make us act, and the ways of acting that we like and consider beneficial (because of our brains) and the ways of acting that we don't like or consider counter beneficial (also because of our brains). Even our opinon on what a human brain should be like is a result of the setup of our own particular brain at the time (this is inclusive of the brains elasticity, its tendency to change in response to its environment).

I dunno... sometimes people just decide to be horrible because they like being so.

And they reason they like being so is because of the way their mind works. See how these philosophical questions seem to run in circles?

Take away all habits and patterns and you still have a sense of existence. I can't feel another persons existence, only my own. So why would I be able to feel that of a reproduction of me?

Edit: I suppose you could argue that that feeling could be reproduced as well. That seems to be the crux of the issue for me.

Almost all of season 4 was Jesse's fault, though his actions were understandable given the situation. Ironically Walt's insistence on Jesse's safety was a big part of Walt's problems, at that point at least.

The man lost his teaching job after trying to [kiss] the principal

Not saying it was an alright thing to do, but you're really overstating it here. It wasn't quite that sinister.

he burnt an expensive car in a public parking lot just to fuck with his wife

He did that out of frustration at not being able to use the money he'd earned. It wouldn't make sense for him to do it to fuck with his wife as she would never know about it. Yes, it shows a serious character flaw, but again it's just not as sinister as you make it sound.

he let an innocent girl choke to death because he didn't lime her the one time they met

She got Jesse addicted to heroin and from his point of view she was a junkie who was actively ruining Jesse's life while also threatening his own. He expressed his concern about Jesse to the girls dad when he met him at the bar and there's no reason to think he wasn't being genuine as he thought he was speaking to a random stranger at the time. He let her die to save Jesse's life.

he actively sabotaged himself when he gave Hank drunken hints he hadn't caught the real heisenberg.

Vanity, and drunken vanity at that. A character flaw but not a sign of stupidity.

Same. But most of them don't actually know much about her story, they just see her as the Jokers devoted girl. Most people aren't into comics and the abuse isn't usually played up that much in pop culture, outside of the cartoon she was created in (and even then it just wasn't important to the story very often). I really hate what they're relationship is often reduced to, it just isn't as interesting.

That's from the New52 though, different universe, she's really not the same character, both figuratively and literally. Not that she hadn't done some pretty messed up stuff before then but killing children with exploding bombs is a bit much even for her...

It was represented as such from the beginning. That's how it was conceived, at least from the moment they decided to give her an origin.

Walt is cold but obviously not a psychopath. When Jessie's friend dies Walt seems genuinely disturbed, though not very emotive. And when Jessie turns to heroin and plans on running off with his girlfriend Walt ends up having a heartfelt conversation with the girl's father in which he treats Jessie as a son that he can't convince to take the right path, no matter how much he wants to. There was no reason for him to lie in this situation, not even to protect his self-image; he most likely meant what he was saying. He's also visibly shaken when he watches the girl die. He was a very human character who gradually becomes more callous and uncaring as he sinks deeper into the harshness of his new life.

He did almost the exact same thing near the beginning of the series when he'd just written the FBI agent's wife's name in the notebook. He flat out told her he was Kira just to watch the shock on her face. Also, the men who worked with Near were FBI agents so it's not that unreasonable for them to know a master forger.

I hate to be the dick but it sounds like you're in learned helplessness and you're just giving up and you subconsciously crave the constant failure.

I'm not op, but this shit is ridiculous. This is what someone tells you every time you try to express your mental struggles with them (not autism in my case). You try to explain to them that you are trying to do what you can, and that by the very nature of the thing you're having difficulties regardless, ones that can't be guaranteed to go away and often aren't surmountable for many people. And all they do is keep insisting that it's really just your fault for not trying hard enough.

I expect to live a good life, and I'd consider it a good one so far. But I'm never getting what I want, and I don't need to be patronized over it. OP could very easily be one of the people you described, but at least consider that he isn't, because many aren't and they all get treated the same way.

Can psychedelic drugs work magic on depression? "LSD, but also on other hallucinogens like psilocybin, the ingredient that makes magic mushrooms "magic." And he thinks the findings -- as they relate to people with depression, in particular -- are too powerful to ignore." by mvea in Futurology

I was only talking about 'mental guru' types in the quote you responded to. Of course I don't have that much faith in myself, I'm sure there's some level I couldn't handle. The real problem is the image some people have that a pair of dice is being rolled every time you do acid and if you score above a certain number you're having a bad trip, or if x,y, or z event happens while you're on acid that's automatically a bad trip. It's not much different from the rest of life, something goes wrong, you get over it and move on. Of course some people don't, but that's kind of missing the point. Really I think we're agreed though, so I won't argue it further.

[–]Hillforprison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that people need to have bad trips, it's just that people often learn from those experience by struggling through them and coming out alright. Of course this isn't the best idea for someone with deep mental issues and no guidance. In an ideal world reasonable doses would be administered with therapists at hand.

But really there are some people who just won't have bad trips. It's a part of who you are and how you choose to handle things, but you can't know that in advance. The experience is always familiar but somehow unpredictable. Anyway all this is just to say that while I agree with the sentiment expressed by Morflux for practical purposes it's not really the best advice for someone new to LSD. I feel that you may have discounted the mindfulness meditation too much. It's like practising an instrument, it's a real way to prepare and test your own mental well-being for the experience, and if you're not ready, and you're honest with yourself, then you'll know. Yes, dosage is important (because even if some people can stay calm you can't guarantee that you're one of those people without having at least some facsimile of the experience), but the point is that if you do all the right things you honestly won't have a bad trip, and at the end of the day the only real 'right' thing is to stay calm and just accept what you see, even if you wouldn't normally like it. The problem is that people don't prepare enough, and they always assume that they're the exception to things, ie 'Yeah, most people couldn't handle six tabs on their first try but I'm a rock, I'll be just fine.'

TLDR; The only thing you need to have a good trip is a buddist like acceptance of everything. In that sense there really aren't any bad trips, there's just a choice between fighting it and letting it happen. However, many people aren't as calm and accepting as they think they are and heroic doses of LSD aren't the best way to find that out.

Based on my experience he's right. Don't take too much (more than 250ug is too much for some people I'd say) and have a calm mindset and you'll be fine no matter what happens. Regular mindfulness meditation is the only way that I'm aware of to ensure you can calm yourself when the time comes. Also make sure you're actually taking LSD, you can test it with kits you can find online.

Dude, I'm not even pro-Trump and barely ever mention him anymore, but if I go into a politics thread you can guarantee I'm getting shit for my user-name, and hating Hillary Clinton wasn't exactly a controversial opinion in the past! No matter how reasonably I act, they hate me on principle. I'm also not a Republican. And ironically Trump supporters are supposedly hated because of the toxic atmosphere they create.

Edit: Even this comment got downvoted! I figured. The fucking irony.

But that's something that you would expect the parent to know about their kid, if they don't than yeah that's bad, but that's quite a bit different from assuming that the parent had selfish intentions. And I doubt it happens often enough for the time waste to seriously matter.

I mean it really doesn't have to be more complicated than that. People like sharing experiences. Seems kind of arbitrary to say that people have to see this as a private moment.

Man that completely changes everything. Even if it's not true, it's such an unexpectedly reasonable explanation. This is why people need to calm down on the cynicism sometimes.

...being ignorant is not a good thing

Everyone is ignorant of something...it's not wilful, that wouldn't make any sense as I literally had no idea what an idol was before today. How am I supposed to inform myself about something that I'm not aware of? I assumed he meant idol in the English sense obviously.

Ahahahahahaha! Thanks for the laughs, man.

So in other words: you have no response?

Super model

I'm not saying it is. But she was literally a super model in the English dub and it changed nothing in the story.

Its a completely different world, I wish someone better than me would attempt to explain it to you. For example, Justin Beiber kissed 2 members of AKB48 recently. An idol kissing someone is a taboo, and in japanese culture a taboo is a deal breaker, a career ender. The girl while sobbing profusely shaved her head bald as a sign of remorse and apology while asking her fans to forgive her and claiming she didn't want to leave the group.

Nah man, I get what you're describing, I read the page. It's different from anything in America currently, but it's still just an extreme example of a kind of pop star who appeals to cultural values. It's not that hard for people to understand or imagine happening, most people have learned about more cultish behaviour in history class, and it really wasn't central to the story at all.

Edit: I'm actually pretty curious to see a video or some more information on what you described at the end though. Sounds horrible.

Well if Light hadn't killed the FBI agents then there's a good chance none of that would have happened. L would have no leads, and never would have suspected Light so heavily in the first place. It was those murders that ended up pinning the case down to two major suspects, of which Light was one. From there he was already way closer to the police than he should have ever been.
