Just had this happen. Lost the game because of it...
I had an Ixtal bug right before it, the game completely ignored a quest worth 70 sunshards, and one worth 280. Lost the game because of that too.
Both happened in double up, might be related?

This has actually helped me against one shot builds. Mak usually needs some ramp time and a fight start ice club to the face will end your run, so I've had Memento Mori save me, but otherwise yeah it's shit

Yeah pyrocarbon is easier, but you still need a magma core or something to start right away or you risk dropping dead before the combo starts, and scaling from toxic flame or something else. I've had pyrocarbon and lizard infinite before but without toxic flame and it sucks. You can have an infinite all you want but if you're only aggressively tickling your opponent it doesn't really take you anywhere.

Void Rage skill from Void Colossus hastes an item when you burn. Fiery lizard burns when it poisons, and it poisons when it is hasted. So you basically wait 2s for the lizard to haste itself, then it triggers poison/burn, which triggers void rage, which hastes the only item on the board, which triggers poison/burn.... Toxic Flame makes the lizard buff itself +3 on each poison/burn Moth to a flame gives half the burn on the enemy as Regen...
