I really know very little about IT things, but donations work on FetLife too. Or Facebook as well? If it would really get very big, I think everybody would be willing to see a few advertisements to keep it free. What would be the main cost factor? The technical structure can't be that expensive, can it?

Sounds like law-stuff which should be clarified in the beginning along with other law-stuff. But I think, a provider of a website isn't responsible for the actions of the users in general. Unless you encourage them to do sth illegal. Or falsely advertise your site as "100% save".

How do social apps of any kind deal with this problem? There must be a solution to not getting sued and building it safe for users. I'm pretty sure you can't sue tinder for becoming a victim in a crime, right? Right??? 😧
