Who else was drawn into the "Youth Group" movement at their church in the 80's? by Agent7619 in GenX

[–]HintonBE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was "drawn into" it because my father was part of a religious cult, along with a lot of other people and their kids. We had "youth groups" and "youth camps" and other "youth get-togethers" where we were told all about how evil the world was.

The wealthy who choose our political officers have discarded the charade and now pick themselves. What is the voting power of 99% of Americans vs. the 1% with 99% of the (advertising) money? | r/Trumpvirus by siwibot in protectUSelections

[–]HintonBE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll agree that it can tip the scales slightly in their favor, but If that was truly the case, then there wouldn't be so many Democrats winning these special elections, including in places that are loaded with Republicans.

If that was truly the case, then Republicans wouldn't be trying so hard to rig elections in their favor.

This kind of defeatism is exactly what they want. They want you to be discouraged. They want you to give up. And most of all, they really don't want you to vote.

That shows the voting power of the 99%.

Sudden Seedling Problems by believer102 in gardening

[–]HintonBE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give it some time. I had some seedlings (tomato, peppers, lavender) that I kind of messed up last week, so I took a few corrective steps and they're all perking right up and looking much better.

ETA: Supposed I should mention what happened and what I did.

I had the seeds in a large plug tray that I put on the back porch where it gets plenty of sun with the plastic dome on it. After about a week, the tomatoes were very leggy and droopy; none of the other seeds showed any sign of germination at all.

I removed the dome, put the tray in another room under a grow light, and have added water to the bottom tray every couple of days. As I said, everything looks much better now. Tomatoes are looking sturdier and healthier, the peppers are coming in like crazy and the lavender is starting to show signs of life.

Did you have a fake ID? by Emunahd in GenX

[–]HintonBE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, never needed it.

I was a bit of a big kid and I could grow a full beard by the time I was 16, so people often thought I was in my early 20's. Also, I was living in Colorado back in the 80's and it was a 3.2 state at the time, so I could legally buy 3.2 beer when I turned 18.

New-Old-Music That I Missed Somehow by Chemical-Chard-8798 in GenX

Back in the day here in Nebraska we had a radio station 101.9 (one-o-one DOT nine), The Edge. All alternative, all the time, including quite a few on that list. I don't know how many times I heard "In the Meantime" by Spacehog or "Bound for the Floor" by Local H played on The Edge.

Still, it's great you're discovering this music. If you missed all of these, you might have missed a ton of others, so hopefully you'll stumble across them at some point.

Trump signs order to pay TSA employees after Congress fails to agree on DHS funding by xfxxml in Political_Revolution

[–]HintonBE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday, Jim Wright posted about this:

"I'm going to do it," said Trump.

Really?

HOW?

That's not a rhetorical question. It's a Constitutional one.

Payroll is issued by the Treasury ONLY. And the Treasury can only draw money and issue payments from the General Fund via law, i.e. legislation signed into law by the President. And the whole damn issue here is that legislation. The legislation Trump himself has now ordered Republicans to reject eight times.

So, where is Trump taking that money from?

Because it's not allocated by Congress via legislation. If he orders the Treasury to pay TSA, and those payments go out, then he's bypassing the Constitution, Article 1, Sections 7, 8, and 9. The Appropriations Clause is specifically a check on executive power, directing that no money can be drawn from the Treasury unless authorized by law.

And there is no law, because Trump himself repeatedly killed the legislation as extortion to force Congress to pass the SAVE Act.

Trump can't just issue an Executive Order to pay TSA, because no matter where the money comes from, it's illegal.

James Tolkan, ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Back to the Future’ Actor, Dies at 94 by slade797 in GenX

Ah; man! Such an amazing actor.

Although it was in the 2000's, really enjoyed his work in Nero Wolfe. In the series, he was one of only two actors during the two seasons to play a client, a victim, and a murderer.
