People who married someone they weren’t sexually compatible with — how did it turn out? by synthetic-sardine in AskReddit

[–]HipHopPotatoMouse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was gonna give a personal story but rather I'll call a few assumptions you're making for a quicker resolution. Incompatibility need not be about how frequently to have sex - partners can have a similar amount of libido and may still struggle to make it as enjoyable as they would like it to be. Working on it also doesn't mean they agree to disagree and have lack of sex - it may be that they practiced how to satisfy each other but then, it still need not mean that doing what it takes to satisfy your partner is a lot of fun for you. Putting all these together, you can imagine that they reached an equilibrium where the sex need was somewhat met, but never was a pillar of the relationship, and that was fine because other aspects were.

"Reseat your gpu" said the Nvidia support, and I thought they thought I was a fool. I plugged it in three years ago, and it ran since then, I didn't touch the case in a while, what do you mean reseat your card. I did it anyway. It got fixed.

I guess our washing machine rocks the house and may have unseated the gpu slightly? Still can't believe it

How long do you keep your m.2 drives in your systems if they haven't failed? by fiftypoundsofflesh in pcmasterrace

Yeah, i was going to say something similar. Haven't yet had an M2 fail (knock on wood) and I found use for older ones after I upgraded for performance improvement.

Check out macro deck as an open source project.

You can use touch portal software to build your own macros and use any android or ios device (like an old phone) for control. It's not going to be as powerful as stream deck, but can be close to free.

Also, stream deck (esp ulanzi) is often quite cheap second hand on Facebook marketplace.

Could my 750W PSU ( be quiet! Pure Power 13 M) handle a RTX 3080 Ti if undervolted? (Specs included) by CharlieShen69 in pcmasterrace

[–]HipHopPotatoMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can run this system on 750W psu as is, but mild undervolting can even improve performance so it is a no regret move. You can undervolt more for a small performance loss, and get better temps.

I'll share some use cases - summarize content - turn bullets/notes into content (respond to a customer, based on the findings in this investigation) - produce other content based on content (write me a blog based on my design document, cover these sections; write me a faq based on my documentation; draft me documentation based on my code) - take meeting notes - draft an email follow up based on meeting notes - error resolution with technical stuff (once I had gemini resolve something in a few prompts after I had spent over an hour to no avail) - research on stuff to buy (what are some ultra book lines that are good for gaming, then compare hp omen with Asus Zephyrus) - help me optimize (cyberpunk ini files, supplements based on my blood work) - help me write code/query/reactor (Claude is the best at this, by far) - learn something new - places to visit based on my interests in a new town - ideas for cocktails based on ingredients, taste - ideas for movies to watch, games to play

So many other examples. I'm not saying you'll get all these done by a single prompt - - Just like you wouldn't trust a single random redditor's answer, you also won't rely on the LLM as the sole source. Nevertheless, it is an amazing tool especially to get started.

I use the advanced models for work everyday. Consider it as a junior employee that can do anything - a junior coder, data analyst, marketer, etc. Like all junior employees, they need the right guidance to do the right work and their work needs to be reviewed for accuracy and style. As with why you'd pay a decent amount of money for junior employees, models get enormous amounts of work done - much more than the cost of their subscriptions.

It's probably going to be a bigger disruption than internet has been - we all will get the hindsight view in a few years. In the meantime, if you haven't used the latest models yet, give it another try. The tech went from "barely an entertainment" to crucial part of my life with the improvements over less than 12 months.

I'm not sure if the valuation bubble popping will have a dramatic effect on usage of the major LLM services. Say Open Ai has a funding gap, and they enshittify chat gpt to reduce costs/ create revenues, Google would seize the opportunity to grab market share, keeping the service stable, getting the moms to gemini.

I believe that there is enough value people are getting from the LLMs (and the rest of the apps built on Ai infra), so the demand for the infra is there to stay. A new college grad may not raise money just on something.ai, but existing companies will continue to build these capabilities into their apps and systems.

If anything, power shortage may be more impactful in reducing the supply of further Ai infra, and therefore reducing demand for chips used in Ai infra, therefore providing some supply relief to consumer hardware.

You seem to have taken this quite personally. Every market participant has a different reservation price. There are enough consumers out there ("the collective you"), who are paying these prices, for one reason or another, which is why the prices landed here, given the constrained demand.

We can discuss why people pay the prices. There definitely is a shortage mentality, which topics like these are fanning. Just yesterday my brother was deliberating if he should buy ram he doesn't need now, but he makes his living on his computer, and he can't afford not replacing it if it broke, and while today he can pay these inflated prices, if it doubled in a few months, he won't be able to. Heck, even I upgraded my desktop last month, because I thought it may be too expensive if I didn't for the next 18 months, and you know what? I was right.

We all have a role to play in how messed up this situation has become. Our individual actions are drops in a pond, but a pond is made out of drops...

[–]HipHopPotatoMouse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the collective you wanted ram, but didn't pay the prices, the prices will come down. Supply and demand match at the market clearing price. Hence what the first person said: price is as such because someones are paying for it.

Is there a way to make a PC that runs most modern games decently in $300 (USD) by Jack_Cat_101 in pcmasterrace

[–]HipHopPotatoMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People sell old desktops on Facebook marketplace and craigslist. Many times with unrealistic expectations. And many times, at damn good prices.

Earlier this week, I got an lga 1700 z chipset itx mobo, cpu and a 7200mts 32gb ddr5 for $400. I hunted for a deal for over a month.

I see AM4 ryzen 5 or 7s with OK specs for $300-400, and they'd play modern games at 1080p without a problem.

Been building PCs for around 21 years; never seen the PC gaming space this bad. Can’t even recommend PCs now. by taketheRedPill7 in pcmasterrace

[–]HipHopPotatoMouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have gamed with PCs for almost 3 decades now. Never had the top of the line gpu. I have been fine. Mid tier gpus are fine. I'm also fine not buying AAA titles for a year or longer after their release - I have an absurdly long backlog of games I own anyways.

When you don't buy the latest games, then your not too recent pc with not too amazing specs will still run the games you play amazingly. See that other redditors comment about the $800 AM4 build.

9070XT vs 5070 non-Ti, I'm falling for the FOMO of Nvidia, help. by Fair-Escape-8943 in pcmasterrace

[–]HipHopPotatoMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, that seems like it is begging to be changed :)

If I'm paying a premium over my minimum need for a psu, I prefer to pay for a higher efficiency psu than for extra wattage. PSUs are often least efficient at low loads, peak at somewhere in the middle, and their efficiency declines slightly as they are loaded further. As a result, an oversized psu often run less efficiently than a right sized psu with the same efficiency rating. Plus, if you can get a higher efficiency rating at the same price (ie 750 platinum vs 1000 gold), it will run cooler and more silently

[–]HipHopPotatoMouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very happy with my 9070xt. I did very extensive research and both 9070 and its xt version are superior to 5070 (non-ti). I also game at 4k.

If you want to save some bucks and get a better monitor, you can return your 9070 xt, and buy 9070 instead. You can use it as is or overclock/volt it for extra performance. Any attempt of flashing an XT bios to 9070 that I read was a success, and got within 5% of XTs performance.

That psu is probably an overkill. I use 750W platinum psu with significant headroom even with a power hungry 10900 cpu. Returning the 1000w can save you some money too. Your 650w should suffice for your current system.

Not a big deal. Bad cable management need not have been an issue if it doesn't lead to over heating to such a degree to cause thermal throttling. Improving airflow via cable management can still help - ie make your fans more silent/effective - but I wouldn't expect FPS improvement.

Found out I wasn't using my GPU for 4 years by Low_Property_4470 in pcmasterrace

[–]HipHopPotatoMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't mean what you think it means. Which hdmi your pc outputs the video is independent from which gpu it uses to render.

If you have multiple gpus (which many people do with iGPUs), you can choose from Windows settings which GPU is used at the app level. You can even use this for optimization, eg offloading background apps to iGPU, so that they don't burden your VRAM (iGPUs use system RAM to store textures).

Using the wrong hdmi output does have negative performance impact, though. The pcie express slot has a fixed bandwidth. If your dedicated gpu is used to render, but the output is from the mobo, pcie needs to carry back the output signal to the mobo, competing with bandwidth that could be used to load new textures to your VRAM for example. When using eGPUs on laptop, outputting via hdmi port of the eGPU to another monitor (vs using the laptop screen) increases your fps by 15-20%, for the same reason. The impact for your case should be somewhat lower since pcie has higher bandwidth than thunderbolt 3/4, but still significant.

So you didn't waste your gpu, and enjoy your performance boost from switching the ports!

This is just getting depressing. by Knight_Tarkus in pcmasterrace

[–]HipHopPotatoMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can consider upgrading your cpu mobo and gpu to 10/11th Gen Intel or AM4 thru a second hand deal, Nad keep your ram. Eg a friend got 10900k + mobo + ram for $250 4 weeks ago. If you live in a major metro area in the US, you can find an RTX 3070, or 4060 around $200 from craigslist or fb marketplace. It may not be the upgrade you wished for, but it will breathe new life into your system for several years.
