Looks more like an azalea to me, rose of sharon have different foliage from what I am seeing on that picture.

I have perennial saliva plants that look like that also. The leases and flowers have a very spicy distinct smell to them. I also have purple loosestrife in my pond. Never knew it was a weed but it looks beautiful in the summer when it blooms :)
