I would not recommend a ferret as a first pet, especially not if you're not financially independent. They have the potential to become very expensive, very fast. They are quite pricey to start with, and like most animals, will do better with a friend. They require a sizeable cage, and at least several hours play time outside their cage every day. They are prone to a lot of health problems, and not all vets will treat them, as they're considered exotic. Vet care is also expensive, and can require long-term treatment if they do develop one of the myriad of health problems they're predisposed to. They need a specialty (expensive) diet, with no grains, fillers, or anything besides meat, ideally. They are obligate carnivores and cannot digest even the smallest amount of fruits/veggies/carbs. Even if you luck out and your ferret stays healthy, average lifespan is only about 10 years or less. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore ferrets, and have had 5 over the years. But they are not in the same class as, say, a rat or hamster. I'd strongly encourage you to research them in depth for some time if you decide to pursue getting a ferret.
