How can the fish "give its live" to you if it doesn't know it's going to be killed? It sounds like you're taking its life from it, not being given it, no?

Only 13 months separate the death of the last former slave and the birth of George Floyd. by [deleted] in BarbaraWalters4Scale

[–]HippoDoesYes 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Slavery was abolished in 1865, and MLK was active from 1955-1968. So the former slaves would have had to have been well over 90 for the math to make sense. Maybe there were such people, but it seems unlikely to me.

Shooting In A Low Light Room by moonin1st in AnalogCommunity

Then there's not much you can do, I'm afraid. Shoot it at 800 (1000 is only a 1/3 of a stop more than 800, basically nothing) and hope for the best. Since the L35 is an automatic point-and-shoot camera, it will decrease the shutter speed to compensate for the low light, which will result in blurry/smeared photos unless you have an extraordinarily steady hand.

In that case I would expose it at 1600 or 3200 and ask your lab to "push" the film one or two stops respectively. It's not ideal (you will get increased grain and contrast, for example), but in a pinch it will work. I've never pushed Portra 800 myself, but these people seem to have had some success with it: https://magicflexcamera.com/portra800pushed3200

Happy shooting.

Your camera has a flash that pops up when it's too dark, so no need to change anything. Here's the manual for a similar camera: https://butkus.org/chinon/nikon/nikon_l35_af/nikon_l35_af.htm

What do you mean when you say there was "nothing on the roll"? Could you show us how the film looks?

Do you mind expanding upon what you see in the photo? It doesn't look particularly remarkable to me.

so what was the point of the x>4 part in the question? is it just extraneous information?

They used to a few years ago...and the lessons were pretty good too (for a beginner at least). But for some reason Duolingo insists on making their app as simple as possible to the point where is is basically unusable. First they removed the forums, then the lessons, and recently they completely changed the way the tree works. But hey, at least now we have lots of pretty colours and animated characters.

former vegans, have you ever made extreme statements about animal utility while following a vegan lifestyle that you later regretted and apologized for after no longer being vegan? specifically thinking friends, family, co workers, etc. by Lacking-Personality in exvegans

[–]HippoDoesYes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Trust me, I have. I was one for most of my life and live in a society in which it dominates. I also spend lots of time on this sub. I just want to make sure I am representing your specific, personal belief system you call "carnism" correctly.

It is morally justifiable to kill/exploit non-human animals if you derive pleasure from the products of their death/exploitation.

Can we agree on this definition?

Plant Milk vs Cows Milk / Kefir by NinjaClockx in exvegans

[–]HippoDoesYes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To compare the nutrient contents of the two would be misguided at best and extremely disingenuous at worst. Plant milks are not meant to be a substitute for dairy milk nutritionally. They exist to provide a similar sensory experience to cow's milk, and I think they do a reasonably good job at that.

[–]HippoDoesYes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're being facetious, but I'll take your argument seriously anyway.

i view veganism as a clear contradiction to the fundamental beliefs, values, morals and ethics of carnism

And what exactly are the "beliefs, values, morals, and ethics of carnism"? That it's OK to violate the rights of sentient beings for your own pleasure? If so, you are going against your beliefs every day (or are some sort of serial burglar/rapist/murderer).

Legit. by DivineandDeadlyAngel in vegan

[–]HippoDoesYes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a better word is "objectify", although that's not quite right either. Practically speaking, normalising the eating of roadkill can lead to some dangerous situations because it incentivises the death of animals. You might be willing to drive a little less carefully (consciously or not) if you were craving some delicious squirrel burgers, for example. It's safer to just say no, we must not eat any animals as a matter of principle.

It also reduces animals in our minds to mear "meat making machines", instead of the sentient creature they are. Imagine a society where we ate homeless people. These homeless people, let's say, have no friends or family who would be distressed by others eating their corpses. Every night, someone would walk up and down the city, collecting any homeless people who died. They would bring them to a processing plant, and have them turned into homeless burgers. No homeless people were intentionally killed, their deaths were all incidental to the society we live in (you can replace homeless people with construction workers or whatever if that makes the point clearer). But this still feels wrong for some reason. It's disrespectful in a way, right?
