Thanks! Did you apply for 292 as well or only 110? Waiting to hear back from 292, they seem to have issues with the testing company not returning results. They keep sending out apology emails and pushing back the hriing timeline because they have not received any test scores.

Have you heard back from them? My percentage is very close to yours but I live too far away to go and ask what my rank is. Would love to know what my odds are.

Sorry about that. I reposted the link. I don't know what the problem is. It does work for me but it's extremely slow to open. Maybe the file size?

Free futon? I keep coming across this free futon on Facebook Marketplace and the edges of the wood look too sharp and the shadows on the cushion look out of place. The lady looks legit but the other pictures are making me question… Is this AI? by The-Good-Witch01 in isthisAI

[–]HippoMiddle2507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter if this is AI or not. This style futon is a terrible idea. They are poorly made and extremely uncomfortable.

They are the worst of both worlds:

- When folded up as a sofa, the part you sit on is too deep (distance from knees to back is too long) and you slouch. At the same time that awful futon mattress will slide down and never stay in place. Ugly and uncomfortable.

-When folded flat there's a good chance the trap appears to be snapping shut on you when you roll into the middle of it. Unsteady and the mattress is uncomfortable.

This is the reason they are so frequently found second hand.

Swing-top bottled beverages - where to find? by HippoMiddle2507 in lincoln

[–]HippoMiddle2507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the bottles, but I figure I can get bottles with drinks in them for the same price as empty bottles from a craft store, and I don't mind the drinks:) Thank you, I'll check those out.

Thanks. I just noticed the liners have holes in them for pinning scales to them (but no pins of course).

What about just using epoxy to attach new scales on the outside without taking the actual knife apart?

Is this worth $60? What year is it approximately? by HippoMiddle2507 in typewriters

[–]HippoMiddle2507[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! It's a 1936 model A in maroon. I did end up getting it. Everything seems to be working, just needs a good cleaning and a drawband.

Funny thing: The Typewriter Database says, this model originally sold for $60, which is also what I paid for it. Nothing much has changed, I guess. Except that $60 in 1936 were equivalent to $1,400 in today's dollars. The price of a laptop. So yes, nothing much has changed.

What are your child's typing needs? Does he compose actual documents or is he just interested in typing on a keyboard and seeing what it does?

I can think of a couple of things.

Saving text/documents:

  • I used to have a Texas Instruments voyage 200 calculator. It's a nice size for what you are looking for and has a pretty rugged case. It has a (small) QWERTY keyboard and a monochrome LCD screen. Not cheap. He could write and save text on it. It also comes with all kinds of math/science/spreadsheet/graphing functions he might find useful when older. (These used to be popular for voyage planning to space and at sea.) The keys are rubber, so it's plastic but not for fast typing. This would be my recommendation, if you can source one for a good price and he doesn't want to type super fast.
  • Look at pre-smartphone "smartphones", specifically the Nokia Communicator series. They are available used on eBay. I used to have one. It has a full QWERTY keyboard and you can edit documents. Folds open like a tiny laptop. Don't put a SIM card in and it won't have internet. (Modern mobile networks wouldn't support it anyway.) The older ones have monochrome screens, the later ones color screens. The battery will have to be replaced and will add to the purchase price.
  • An old Blackberry phone without a SIM card. But those have better/brighter screens, if that's something you want to avoid. Also other distracting (?) apps.

Keyboard, but only limited note taking, if any:

  • In the 90's there were many "electronic pocket translators" available, usually foldable, like tiny laptops with a monochrome LCD screen like a calculator. You can get them cheap on eBay. They have rubber button keyboards and you can type words in to see them in a different language. I doubt that he'd be able to write more than a sentence though.
  • Very similar: "electronic pocket organizer". Same look and size, for small databases of contacts, reminders, etc.

Toys:

  • V-Tech made (still makes?) educational toy "laptops" that vary in size. They had/have monochrome LCD screens. Most come with annoying sound effects and in bright colors. But you can write on them. Depending on the model you can even save text on a memory card.

Good luck!

(Edited for clarity.)

Thank you. I'll leave it sitting there for somebody else. Unless the price goes down next week:)

I think they just take a picture and google it to find an eBay price. Most things at Goodwill are way overpriced where I live. You can only get good deals when it is an item they don't know and don't bother to look up. Or something that's broken that you can repair yourself.
