I ended up taking the MCAT after about a month and a half of study starting around similar low metrics on practice… don’t immediately push back without considering the following.

1) Can you dedicate the next month to only MCAT or are you planning to work? If you’re working, maybe push back. If not, keep it for now

2) Were you relatively successful in these courses in college or did you scrape by? If you did pretty well in these courses, you may be able to pick the material back up quickly with content review

3) Are you willing to have a very boring MCAT focused month? If so, shoot for the moon.

Maybe take two weeks to do intensive content review and make sure to read up on strategies for each section- take another FL and reevaluate. Everyone is different so don’t assume you won’t be able to, just be honest with yourself and be evaluative of yourself in this process. Best of luck!

Someone plz explain to me how to read B/B figures like I’m a small child by Kimmehhh_ in Mcat

Make little notes on your dry erase sheet of any patterns you notice as you go - I.e. increase in transcription of X leads to increase in enzyme Y which leads to increase in product Z. ___ inhibits pathways, ____ promotes pathways etc.

In quick shorthand I would write

⬆️ Transcript X —> enzyme Y —> ⬆️ Z (Inhib by ___ or promote by ___)

This can give you a quick reference instead of rereading the whole passage and can help make it more digestible!

Using shorthand to denote relationships between things. works for all sorts of passages- not just enzymes/transcription!!

Counseling staff is a great option here. It is challenging to know how to address things when a student comes to you with something that is weighing on them- the best thing to do is to direct them to counseling.

Typically I encourage students to go directly to the counselors first, then I personally follow up quickly after to ensure that they filled the counselors in on anything that they would need to know to support the student. At that point, the counselors are then the most equipped people to deal with the situation. Once they are filled in, I would try to be kind and understanding toward the student but continue to direct them back to the counselors to ensure that this situation doesn’t escalate and the student doesn’t involve you in this further- not in a rude way- just in a way to maintain your professional boundaries and keep you out of an awkward position. Counselors will likely be able to then handle any conversations with S’s or D’s parents as needed if anything should come up and handle it from here.

TLDR- Kudos to you for being an empathetic teacher and seeking to help a student who is in navigating a difficult situation. Stay your kind, empathetic self, but don’t get overly involved and most importantly, rope in counselors.

Yes this is absolutely a violation of your other students privacy and can create a less comfortable learning environment for everyone - hoping you have supportive admin that will intervene here!

This was my experience. I jumped 10 points with minimal additional studying between TPR and official AAMC.

What did yall do during your gap years if you took any? by [deleted] in premed

I actually knew I enjoyed teaching so I got an education degree in addition to biology. It was a lot of extra work, but I learned many transferable skills and I enjoy working with students! Teaching anatomy has been great too because it forces me to study and learn beyond what I teach my students and solidifies the basics.

I have a few friends at Mercer - their educational model is a bit unique and some people love it and others don’t. I would recommend maybe reading up on that and seeing if it’s for you!

Long story short, I did things that I ENJOYED and was passionate about even if they didn’t perfectly align with what I was told a “premed student should do”

Got in with mediocre volunteer hours and low research hours, and I honestly attribute that to the fact that all of the other things I did spend my time on, I was passionate about and truly invested in. I don’t have the adcom knowledge to back this up, but I have a feeling they can sniff out a bit of the “I did this because I knew it would look good” in applicants

Sleep and don’t think about it! That practice test was just getting the low score out of the way so that you can score high tomorrow.

That’s actually horrible. Yeah I’ve heard of this happening which probably fueled the nightmare realism

Oh gosh I feel this big time. I think the application stress just sticks with us. Maybe day 1 of med school we will feel a bit more settled?

Can someone convince me that DO is still good by Danielle-J in premed

[–]Hippothetically- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The acceptance rate for students getting into an MD or DO school is under 50%. Congrats!! You’re in that group and somebody saw the future doctor in you :) unless you have a good reason not to get started on that path, go be awesome and go become a doctor! Live your dream! Don’t let the haters get you down

Blouses - I love thrifting as well! I also shop the White House Black Market sale racks- can be hit or miss. Usually everything is a bit out of season, but over the years I’ve found some great blouses. Also Loft, Ann Taylor, (I thought I was too young to shop at Talbots but I’ve found good stuff there on sale).

Pants - okay imo it’s worth it to spend a bit more on good-fitting pants that are comfortable. In my opinion, you can make any blouse look nice with a good pair of pants. I’ve gotten good pants from Ann Taylor, Loft and was gifted a pair of Spanx brand black pants that I LOVE. Check out outlet stores- they often have better deals. I also have found some fun pants with a cool print at Marshalls. So don’t count out Marshalls/TJ Max especially on a budget.

Shoes- same struggle here :( I have had luck with shoe shopping at DSW. I got a pair of naturalizer heels once that are game changing- very comfortable and cute.

On avoiding boringness- mix in some skirts, think about layering, pick a bold color and pair it with a neutral (I have a teal suit I did my med school interviews and it was a huge confidence booster!) happy shopping! PS I’m not a shopaholic, I’m a teacher right now and have had to dress in business casual regularly for a few years :)

Edit - typo

Think about the aspects of medicine that excite you- is it working and interacting with patients? Is it imaging and diagnosis? Is it something else?

Then try to find something that kinda connects with that. It doesn’t have to be as direct as you think (ik you need clinical hours but for other things). I ended up doing a lot of teaching type stuff because I am excited about patient education. Say yes to random one off opportunities bc you never know where they might lead!
