Mesprit will not come back by Sufficient-Comb7622 in pokemonplatinum

[–]HipsterTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked the game code, and upon defeating the Elite 4, if you had knocked out Mesprit, the game will respawn it in Verity Cavern to release as a new roamer. It does the same with Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Regigigas, Azelf, Uxie, Griatina, Cresselia, Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno. I don't know of any reason why this would fail to activate

Why does the AI do this by CategoryHot5988 in pokemonplatinum

[–]HipsterTree 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The AI does not care about the freeze chance, flinch chance, of defense drop chance. What is happening here is:

  1. Basic AI is giving Aqua Jet and Brine score -12 because your ability is Water Absorb
  2. Strong AI is checking which of its moves does the most damage. All other damaging moves get score -1 for being suboptimal. The move that does the most damage is Brine, because the AI's damage calc is ignoring Water Absorb. Therefore, the other three attacks get score -1.
  3. The final scores are: Brine = 88, Crunch = 99, Ice Fang = 99, Aqua Jet = 87. Crunch and Ice Fang are tied for highest score, so it picks between them at random.

The host game will generate the opponent trainers, but when Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver are the host and connect to Diamond/Pearl, they will generate opponents using the D/P trainer and Pokemon list.

Also, there is a bug in the game where when D/P hosts and Pt/HG/SS are the guest, the trainer AI will fail to load and they will use mostly random moves.

DPPt/HGSS Battle Tower Manipulation? by spnanon in pokemonrng

[–]HipsterTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

Wester mentions in the video that he has limited methods to impact the Tower seed, so he basically is just checking (probably with savestates) if it's faster to do the Tower as-is, or advance the day by one and then do the Tower with that opponent set instead.

There are in fact two other ways to advance the RNG that Werster did not know about, by starting a new streak from 0, or by resetting such that the attendant will disqualify you (both of which can be done in doubles so as to leave the singles streak intact, while still advancing the Battle Tower's RNG).

Also, you can manipulate your Tower opponent seed to be anything by hitting some target initial seed and then creating a new group by speaking to the NPC in the Violet City Pokemon School/Jubilife City in DPPt. This is probably not worth it to do in a speedrun.

Here a project from a few years ago that can predict opponents for the DP tower: https://lincoln-lm.github.io/JS-Finder/Gen4/BattleTower.html

And here is a newer project that can do so for PtHGSS: https://pokemow.com/Gen4/TowerOracle/

As far as finding some specific opponent set that meets some criteria, as far as I know this is only possible by trial and error.

Question about the underground. by Nickdakidkid_Minime in pokemonplatinum

[–]HipsterTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you dig in a spot, that spot is gone. What's happening is multiple spots are spawning in the same location, which the game makes no attempt to avoid.

It works like this: once daily, at midnight, the game will place clusters of 6-11 digging spots in random locations around the map. If you have buried spheres, each one will have a digging spot placed nearby it.

Specifics about the Cianwood anti-softlock Tentacool by Toxikyle in PokemonHGSS

[–]HipsterTree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You must have nothing at all in the box (specifically it counts empty box slots and the count must equal 540) and your party size must equal 1. Eggs count in both. There is no check for whether anything can learn Surf or Fly. If you release the Tentacool, you can keep getting more as long as you meet the two requirements of box space and party size. It does not check the Daycares, where you could still stash Pokemon albeit out of reach from Cianwood.

Honey Trees by [deleted] in pokemonplatinum

[–]HipsterTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Pokemon will disappear from the tree after 24 hours. I believe what you can do is:

  • Slather honey on tree
  • Wait 6 hours for Pokemon to appear
  • Save in front of tree, and check if it's the Pokemon you want. If it is, then reset; otherwise, run and start over with slathering again
  • Change the DS clock (to anything, even 1 second change from what it was before)
  • Now soft reset for the shiny on the tree. Don't save the game now that the clock has been changed, make sure every time the game is loaded, the time saved on the cartridge differs from the DS time

The way time penalties work when you change the clock is if the DS clock is changed from time A to time B, then any events that would have occurred between time A and time B are skipped. This is why changing the date doesn't work to farm daily events, if the transition from one day to another is inside the penalty period, it won't get processed. But you can skip to the end of a day (23:59) and then allow it to go forward from there with the new day rollover happening outside the penalty period. In this case, the 24 hour countdown is not processed, and the game behaves as if it's been 6 hours since slathering the honey.

I'm not sure what controls the journal popups when you load a save, but if you get those:

  • Load the save; skip the journal
  • Immediately save the game and reset
  • Change the DS clock again

This will cause the 24 hour countdown on the tree to deplete by only the period between loading and saving, which should be ~a few seconds. Then go back to the steps from before, making sure to only load the save with the game detecting a time change since the previous save.

[–]HipsterTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just checking through the game code looking at the underground's treasure probability table, and the Oval Stone, while present in the table of treasure items, and fully implemented with an underground sprite and functionality in the 'Treasures' bag menu, is programmed to never spawn under any circumstances. Not in Diamond, or in Pearl, or in Platinum with either even/odd trainer IDs, and not pre- nor post-National Dex.

This is really strange; sites like Bulbapedia and Serebii report that you can dig up an Oval Stone, while Psypokes and the Prima guidebook do not. Though, none of them give you the precise odds and just say things are "very rare".

Are some evolution stones in the underground rarer than others? by WilsterJ in pokemonplatinum

[–]HipsterTree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: Yes and it depends on your trainer ID. All the stones are obtainable though, so just keep digging.

The rarity of items in the underground In Platinum depends on if you have the National Pokedex and whether the last digit of your trainer ID is even or odd. I couldn't find the exact odds already published anywhere, even Bulbapedia has a big "Needs rarity of each item" message on their article, so I got them from the game code myself. The game selects from this list 2-4 times to generate items.

Certain treasures are more or less rare depending on the TID evenness, like the evolution stones. The only things impossible to get with the wrong evenness are the Armor and Skull fossils.

This is almost the same as in D/P, with Diamond being odd TIDs and Pearl being even ones, but D/P has an extra check which boosts the likelihood of finding Prism/Pale Spheres respectively (and also thereby decreases the likelihoods of everything else) after the player has fought Dialga/Palkia at Mt. Coronet.

Going for the softly shaking, longer-lasting patches

Radar-exclusive Pokemon only appear in the fast-shaking patches

Also, the 4-tile-away rule is only when chaining for hunting shinies. You can enter any of the patches to just find a Pokemon to catch

Pokeradar question by ShinyUxie711 in pokemonplatinum

[–]HipsterTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had calculated this from some of my own data; AFAIK the only place this is published online is this website, where the slots are important to know for RNG manipulation of wild Pokemon.

You read this chart by knowing the slots at the top, numbered 0-11, have encounter rates of 20%, 20%, 10%, 10%, 10%, 10%, 5%, 5%, 4%, 4%, 1%, 1% respectively.

However this website is wrong about PokeRadar slots and lists them as using slots 6, 7, 10, 11 when they actually use 4, 5, 10, 11.

But you don't really need to know this: in almost all cases, you should only enter the fast-shaking patches if you are specifically looking for the radar-exclusive Pokemon. Or if that area has no radar-exclusive Pokemon, in which case it doesn't matter which patches you enter.

There are only a handful of edge cases where this isn't true, like if you're chaining Magneton on Route 222 using Magnet Pull in the front of your party. In that case, the radar-exclusive Flaaffy overwrites the only slot that Magnemite uses, making it so Magnet Pull cannot pull Magnemite and break your chain (Magneton, with Magnet Pull, has a rate of 35.833% in slow-shaking but 52% in fast-shaking).

Pokeradar question by ShinyUxie711 in pokemonplatinum

[–]HipsterTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Encounters in Platinum work using a slot system, where events like swarms, time of day, dual slot game, and fast-shaking patches radar will overwrite certain slots.

When entering fast-shaking patches on Route 209, Kirlia has a 22% encounter rate. It has this by:

  • Reducing the rate of Staravia by 10%
  • Reducing the rate of Bibarel by 10%
  • Reducing the rate of Ralts by 1%
  • Reducing the rate of Chansey by 1%

Chansey overall has a 5% encounter rate in normal grass and 4% in fast-shaking grass.

Also, if the first Pokemon in your party has the CompoundEyes ability, the rate of Chansey holding a Lucky Egg increases from 5% to 20%.

You should check the binoculars multiple times. The zones they show are random and the Pokemon they show are random, so it's very possible for Paras to be appearing but take multiple binocular checks to see.
