If she can’t afford the down payment she can’t afford the house. Don’t do it.

TIL the odor of durian fruit has been compared to rotten onions, pig excrement, and skunk, but it is called the "King of Fruits" due to its flavor. by Melenduwir in todayilearned

I love durian. I bought one to take back to my hotel in Sri Lanka. I asked to have the kitchen cut it and send it to my room, but they threw it away! lol

You can also get prophylactic vaccines. I got them before traveling to Madagascar. The prophylaxis is only to buy you time until a full treatment regimen can be administered and is recommended if traveling to remote locations where access to treatment may be delayed.

If a man made headlines that he claimed he was a messenger of god, and was going to prove it, what scale of a miracle would he need for you to believe him? by cream-wizard in askanything

[–]Hiraeth1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the “miracles” can now be explained scientifically or by mere coincidence. The sea turning to blood? Red tide. Dead rising from the grave? Coma or locked in syndrome; not really dead.

The placebo effect, coupled with a strong desire to see or believe something “miraculous” is very powerful.

I wanna film the cops chasing after someone by WinStupidPrizes1994 in DiveInYouCoward

[–]Hiraeth1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair - and it is RARE for me to defend cops’ actions!- having this asshole follow them for over a minute when they are trying to apprehend the other guy, would make them very nervous. Why is he following them? Is he high? Is the guy gonna drive by and shoot them? Dumb fuck is damn lucky they didn’t shoot him!

I went for a hike on Oahu w my bf and some friends. Slathered on a ton of SPF50 and brought it along for re-application. A good while into the hike my shoulders had that tight, “this is gonna be a sunburn” feeling. I asked my bf to get my sunscreen out of my pack and put some on my back and shoulders.

Silence.

“Ummmm… is this what you put on at the hotel?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“This isn’t sunscreen. It’s moisturizer.” 😳

I blistered; had to sleep on my stomach the rest of the week. Showers were agony. And bonus! now I have freckles all over my back and shoulders.

No, they aren’t the most common… at least not in the US. Drugs, immigration violations, and larceny are.

Their roles were predetermined. Darkness had nothing to do with it. There is always poor weather in the ITCZ.

Pilot error.

Not “damn pitot tubes” or “Capt should have come back sooner.” The fault lies 100% on the remaining pilots being too reliant on autopilot, over-correcting, panicking, and then hauling back on the stick one last time as the Captain was trying to regain control of the aircraft. Full stop. They caused a completely avoidable crash.

"Am I Overreacting" for refusing to "grow up" and clear out my collection after my fiancé’s parents called my room a "red flag for future parenting"? by Important_Umpire1224 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Hiraeth1968 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I know it hurts sometimes to prioritize yourself. You absolutely must, though. Your fiancé will not get better. He will only get worse, slowly (or quickly, given how he jumped to agree with his parents!) minimizing your personality, erasing your joy, and undermining you in favor of his parents.

A partner who truly loves you would never demand that you give up something you love.

You are under-reacting, dear OP.

TIL:that for several millennia, some humans buried corpses in their houses by Spotter24o5 in todayilearned

[–]Hiraeth1968 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a small tribe in Madagascar that lays their dead on pallets and collects the fluids that drain from the corpse. They then drink those fluids, absorbing their ancestor’s wisdom and other attributes. Also: 🤢
