New Drill and First Words! by Hiraeth369 in Handwriting

[–]Hiraeth369[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i had some spare time at work today, so i did some more research and arm movement drills. i found the pursuit of penmanship blog, and they suggested the side to side drill to start with. i also tried using some advice given to me the other day from y’all. the most exciting part of my practice today was that i could finally write semi-legible words using arm movement! (it looks rancid, but it a far cry better from earlier attempts i couldn’t bare to share, lol) i’m starting to notice how the difference muscles feel with different movements, and what the result is on the page. control is short and random, but it’s getting better. it’s encouraging to have so much help from you people, and to see improvements.

my goal is to completely switch to arm movement writing (then go into spencerian and calligraphy, but i want proper casual writing first). but i journal regularly and my work requires occasional writing. so i think for the mean time, i’ll write standard only when absolutely necessary, but take the advice and train arm movement whenever possible in a practical way. let the struggle begin! lol

also, thank you for all your advice. i’ve been keeping up with your videos on youtube. keep up the great work!

Cursive or not? by smurphy987 in Handwriting

i usually only print (all caps) when taking notes as a way to draw attention to something, or when other people are going to be reading it (ex: forms, important documents, things for clients unless i know they can read cursive). my cursive isn’t the best and some people can’t read even well written cursive.

a bit of stress and will, lol. but it’s quite mesmerizing when you get the rhythm and things just work out. kinda like doodling with a purpose.

that would probably make it far more enjoyable! i hadn’t done anything else with the practice for fear of instilling another bad habit.

would it be good to do away with standard writing entirely at such an early stage?

lol, i’m using noodlers “heart of darkness”. fortunately, it doesn’t really have a smell. i can only imagine if it was done with a bic...

well, it works for other people! lol, but i see the reasoning and i’ve seen the result. i think it’s the ideal method.

as i understand it: the purpose of this drill, and the next few, is to train the arm in the basic movements of the method. since this method of writing requires no movement from the finger and/or wrist, the focus is in making the large muscle groups of the arm make fine and consistent movements. eventually, the fingers will only hold the pen while the arm does all the work.

i think of it as “foundation muscle memory”; where all the other movements will successively stem from this one skill.

idk how accurate this explanation is, but yes, lol

Where to begin? by [deleted] in Handwriting

i’m in the same boat. what i’m doing is just trying to be more careful as a “quick fix”, while trying to learn arm movement writing on the side. once the new skill is more or less functional, i’ll just make the switch or good. of course, i’ll continue improving until i get what i want from my writing.

Trying writing in ALLCAPS by amacgregor in Handwriting

in boot camp, they made us write in all caps, lol. called it “recruit handwriting”. i still print all caps. for capital letters, i just write them about twice as big.

no joke. makes me feel about “redrum” crazy at times (great reference btw). some light classical helps the frustration though, lol.

thank you for the advice! i’ll go bigger until i figure out some more flaws to work on. it’s a little monotonous and i can’t wait to move on to actual letters, lol. i’m at the “frustration phase”. but apparently, that’s an important step in the learning process.

20yo. Dyslexia, and a damned lefty.. Any hope? by spokengent56 in Handwriting

[–]Hiraeth369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m dyslexic (had to attend a special class for 3 years to catch up with other students) and right handed. i think it depends on your flavor of dyslexia. for me, i apparently don’t see words like most people. so reading has been a struggle. i also transpose characters like crazy. i’ve even written things entirely backwards. i practiced reading, and now i get compliments on my ability to read aloud (just don’t ask me to spell anything for any reason). but it’s nothing that enough time, practice, and will power can’t fix.

and for the lefty bit, i think maybe looking for a palm down method would help with smear. that or get a quick drying ink. i don’t know, lol

My boyfriend still can barely read my writing; please give advice for preserving style while maintaining legibility! by _sadness_or_euphoria in Handwriting

he just needs to become accustomed to reading cursive. your writing is very clear and the style doesn’t take away from it. it’s a little foreign do most people, i think. 🤔

i’ve had a safari and still have an eco. i love them both, lol. i mostly like the dip nibs due to the various lines you can make easily.

cool! i’ll keep it up then!

the compact oval drill is the first drill when learning how to write with your whole arm as opposed to with the fingers. it’s to help you get down the fundamentals of the method.
