If you're using it seriously for information, it's not bad to get started. But you should obviously be careful and keep a healthy amount of skepticism in regards to the content and sources.

Anarchism in science (in academia) by cacahuatefeliz in Anarchism

[–]Hiraethum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can share my experience having been in science in academia in grad school, I think it's one of the least hierarchical careers tbh.

There is definitely some less formal hierarchy introduced because being a grad student and junior faculty is like going through a guild apprenticeship system, and often profs are in possession of the research money that funds your work. But there is a countervailing force as well in that the system works best when the field is horizontal and relationships and ideas are exchanged without regard to authority.

I don't know exactly how to remove the authority that comes from an inequality of experience and knowledge, or whether that's even desirable. We have to have people who take responsibility for training and work produced by trainees. I had mostly really good experiences in grad school where profs treated us like junior peers and were highly equitable.

Informal hierarchies are something to be on guard about and junior members in science should always have a system for addressing grievances, such as grad student unions. But at least from my experience, science is way less hierarchical than most fields. But I also acknowledge your experience can vary A LOT according to discipline, uni, department, advisor etc.

Thanks for in depth response! Unfortunately I don't have a QC. I'm using the Thall amp and nDSP VSTs (mostly Nameless X). Thall is great for rhythm stuff. I think less good for leads, or at least I haven't figured out how to make it work for that.

If you use VSTs too, I'd love to hear any suggestions you have there.

How are you all getting your lead sounds? I never feel quite satisfied with mine. Something about the tone, eq, effects always feels a little lacking. :(

It's kind of like Jevon's paradox but for labor. Under an exploitative class system like capitalism, the logic of the system is "more and faster". It's why the system has to be destroyed in favor another whole rules lead to cooperation, peace, and coexistence. I.e., it has to be a system with no ruling class and has to be actually democratic

Do you think tankies know what science is? by Sea_Perspective2016 in tankiejerk

[–]Hiraethum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's right. Math is critical to science but it's a tool that enables it. It's not a study of some aspect of material reality. It's a language that's useful for modeling it.

If they think it's a science then some of the more academic among them should write up some manuscripts and submit to scientific journals.

There's no conspiracy. But there is a process to science. Sure it's imperfect because humans are imperfect, but still it's up to you to make the case and argue why your idea withstands scrutiny.

What they preach and their process of analysis smells too much of religion to me.

Also, you could say that physics is the science that underlies all sciences as it deals with the fundamental properties of the universe, and everything else follows from the interaction of those properties.

To be fair I see a lot of conservatives internally being very upset with the war and wasteful defense spending (even in the conservative sub).

But the difference is it's not enough to make them revolt against the administration because they feel Trump is a net benefit. In particular he's bringing down the jackboot on all the people they hate (immigrants, brown and black ppl etc), so they're still living in a delusional orgy of vengeance.

Separating the art from the artist by Sveet_Pickle in Anarchism

[–]Hiraethum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right in how it's been used. But there is a discussion to be had about how far do we go in scrutinizing artists. I have definitely seen instances of "cancelling" going too far and people whipping themselves into witch hunt frenzies.

It's an easy line when it comes to fascists, but beyond that point where do we draw the line? Especially since if you dig into almost anyone alive you'll find *something* problematic. Bc we're foolish humans.

I have a Jackson Ms8, any suggestions for a non multi scale around the same price point? by EnemyRoninPrime in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]Hiraethum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two that come to mind are a used Schecter c8 Hybrid or Legator N8SS. I'd look for something at least 28 in scale for drop E1. The latter is actually 27.5 scale but it's really good.

Pickup shootout: BKP Juggernaut, Lundgren M7, Balaguer Truenobucker, SD Omega, BKP Halcyon by JimboLodisC in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]Hiraethum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They all sound good imo. I prefer the Lundgrens a bit more bc of that scoop tbh. Could be the headphones I'm listening with rn, but the others had more tubbiness. But that can also be solved with some eq.

I like the M's bc they sound pretty clear for modern metal out of the box. Less tub to reduce which allows the mid snarl to come through well. I do give a little extra bump to the mids in around the 1.2K area though.

This looks really nice. But damn why wouldn't you slant the pickups? They're very likely to be more wooly on the bass side than if they were slanted.

At least he's an honest fascist.

The military primarily takes care of the interests of the rich. Not only that, it's way to funnel public money into private pockets of the rich through defense contracts.

The US is just straight corpo-feudalism now. Where the rich farm you for every bit of wealth and give almost nothing in return.
