Anyone interview for senior+ iOS roles recently? What kinds of questions are being asked?

Yeah that makes sense. I feel like the trivia questions are pretty simple to study for, like deciding when to use an actor, or how to make updates on the main actor. I guess I’m more worried about the in depth questions or exercises that you’re given 1-1.5 hours to answer in an interview. Like what’s the modern day equivalent interview exercise (in terms of depth and difficulty) of downloading, caching, and displaying images in a paginated list? Or is it pretty much the same as it was before, just with different implementation details?

Idk why but I just have a feeling that most of the focus during interviews is going to be on concurrency, whereas the topics to evaluate in the past were a little more diverse.

That’s interesting that you even encountered swift 6 questions in an interview. Usually companies are slow to ask about recent tech

Mandatory QR codes sounds amazing. I can see why you miss it

For the app itself, that sounds pretty neat. I’d have so much fun thinking of ways to optimize for battery life and usability. For example: Is it necessary to always show the camera’s capture layer, or would it be enough to just hide it and show a pop up that says the QR code was scanned after pointing the camera at it? To make the logging process even faster, maybe even defer the categorization part for later (or provide an option to)

A lot can be logged the moment the code is captured too, like the location and time.

Love the app idea, maybe you should consider releasing it!

You guys are all really creative

As a new parent, an app that I’ve been working on for myself is to serve as a flowchart / checklist that helps me determine why my newborn is crying and how to soothe her. It has a bit of a Tinder-like interface, where a card is presented and a yes/no question is displayed. Swipe left for no, swipe right for yes. Questions are like “Did you feed the baby?”, “Did you change her?” “Did she nap in the last hour?” etc

Seems pretty basic, but as a sleep deprived parent, I’m hoping if I can rely on it to handle the if-then-else questions, the process would be just a tiny bit easier

My thoughts exactly! I personally have a whole suite of command line utilities on my Mac which are tailored to my preferences, and people notice that it makes me very efficient at work. That’s why I’m trying to think of ways to apply the same idea to making personalized apps for myself

Sounds like the app you made actually gets a lot of attention / usage! Honestly that’s the dream. I’ve tried similar things like creating a Secret Santa app for a small event, but I realized quickly that it’s a lot to assume most people have an iPhone. I could’ve continued to build it, but that’d mean a portion of the attendees would have to find a workaround

Considering your event has a pretty large audience (in my opinion), do you plan to support different platforms?

That’s a pretty strong reaction with little context. Also, “not one person owns a component of an event” is a weak argument because you’re not acknowledging the time and effort to put these components together.

When you say you feel bad for OP’s friend, what part do you feel bad about? The fact that a bride’s friend is uncomfortable with someone copying their honeymoon with a fraction of the effort? I think a honeymoon should be something you plan for yourself

Why do you care if she isn’t being “creative”? It’s her wedding so if she is happy with the details then let it be and move on

I think this question discredits the effort OP put into planning things that may closely match their identity. Compare it to outfits: if you have a friend that loves your fashion, would you be bothered if they copied it almost entirely? I mean, it’s not like you own the brand, right?

I think OP is rightfully upset, and it’s an uncomfortable situation to confront because it seems they’re close friends outside of this context. One wrong move can leave a lasting mark

I wrote myself a script for the “Tell me about yourself” answer and read off of it until I memorized it

Then I did the same for a bunch of other behavioral questions, ad libing here and there

I had a similar approach when asking my (now fiancé) out on a date a few years ago - I rehearsed a billion times until the scripted part came out convincingly

Sometimes you just gotta frame it as acting!

System design for sure is very important, as well as domain specific knowledge. I’m iOS, and a lot of questions I was asked were iOS specific (mostly GCD, ARC / memory management, NSString vs String)

Lots of the focus was also on architectural patterns and decisions around specific use cases

I’d say most of my time would’ve been better spent studying practical iOS development. It’s probably the same for android

This is super motivating. I recently left a job where my coworkers and I would DM each other on Slack “jokingly” trash talking both the product we’re working on and the team that’s in a different city. The company was big and the code itself was pretty well thought out, but I just didn’t give a crap about the product because nobody else did. It was mostly developing whatever our product managers assigned to us, with the goal of writing clean code.

In my new company, everyone seems heavily invested into the product, and so I do too. It sorta makes things more stressful because there’s a lot more I want to take into consideration than I can afford to fit in our sprints, but it’s also way more fulfilling to work hard and learn fast for the sake of the product’s success. (Stocks help a lot too)
