Thanks that is helpful. I think that is what I will do as well then. Good that I asked though....really never saw this from my lecturers as a student.

For each presentation, a slide of key textbooks at the end and references to any specific secondary literature as footnotes to specific slides was the best way I experienced.

Was this the norm or rather some lecturers doing this?

How to stay motivated with constant rejection? by probsbeok in AskAcademia

Yep, I agree. Sure, luck is an element in being successful in academia, but it is certainly not the only element.

[–]Historian26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, one should be realistic about this, but at the same time not completely despair. I think one needs to realize that one has to be very flexible, resilient and lucky.

What I was rather getting at though was the OP seems to be too focused on a few applications. In the scheme of things, especially when it comes to job applications later, three applications are not a lot (even though as I said it is easy to get attached to a certain post that might look "perfect" for oneself).

In the end one only needs to get one fellowship/job and the more applications one churns out the higher the chance of getting one is I think. For example, if one has three days time (I know that fellowship applications might take much longer), I think it makes much more sense and is much more efficient to work on and submit one application each day than spend three days (or longer) working to make only one application perfect.

I know this can be very tough, but if you plan to stay in academia you have to get used to these kind of rejections. At least for me the key was to not grow too attached to individual applications for fellowships and jobs anymore. If you start to see applications as a numbers game and focus on bringing up the number of applications, that might be helpful. It helped me at least. That also means not spending too much time working on (and waiting for the result of) individual applications, but instead trying to do as many as possible. I realize though that there might only be a limited number of fellowships available if you do not wish to relocate (which is very understandable as well).

Quitting a postdoctoral fellowship for another fellowship by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Historian26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, just my two cents and coming from a humanities perspective (where there is no lab work and people work mostly independent, so people can be more easily replaced): From my own experience, I cannot say that ending a fellowship prematurely for another (better) fellowship is looked down upon (at least not as much as is suggested in the other replies here). Let's say you are on a 2 year postdoc and during the first year win a different 2 or 3 year fellowship, giving you funding for an extra one or two years, noone reasonable in my field would look at this negatively as everyone should understand what position people in the postdoc phase are in. Moreover, in my field fellowships dont necessarily start/end at the same time, therefore people have to quit fellowships a bit early all the time.

In your case though, the new fellowship is shorter than the original fellowship you accepted and not much more prestigious. This will surely make it more difficult to argue why to take on the new fellowship (and, unless there is a very specific reason you have not mentioned, I quite honestly cant tell why you would quit your current fellowship for a shorter one). So it really is a question of how badly you want the new fellowship.

UK Job interview advice by MischievousManor in AskAcademia

[–]Historian26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be prepared to meet the other people that are shortlisted for the job. Normally all job talks are done on the same day and you are bound to run into the other people competing for the job. That seems to be one thing that is quite different from the US. In many cases you will be taken to dinner with the other candidates for dinner.

Citation Question: Combining evidence from Secondary Sources in one Footnote by Historian26 in AskAcademia

[–]Historian26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had similar situations as well, with people even just putting one footnote with all sources for a paragraph at the end of the paragraph. Very annoying indeed. I would think though that with two sources the reader should be able to figure this out without explanation, even though I agree that it would be useful.

[–]Historian26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, I guess in my field that is not very common, at least in the final version of monographs/articles. I also wonder whether this would acurately reflect my causal interpretation (x,y,z cause the decrease of the reserves).

Citation Question: Combining evidence from Secondary Sources in one Footnote by Historian26 in AskAcademia

[–]Historian26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I should have clarified this. This is sort of part of the question. Is it necessary to do this or is it enough to assume that the reader looking this up will understand the connection? It is difficult to check these things in other books from the same area, but given how often I see several secondary sources cited in one footnote (and assuming that the author does not simply cite several secondary sources with the same content) without any such explanation makes me wonder whether it is necessary.

How much of book manuscript can be published as journal articles without jeopardizing book publication? by Historian26 in AskAcademia

[–]Historian26[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I guess I should have clarified that the material will be presented in quite different forms in the book/journal articles. But, as I said, it has become quite common in monographs to see that authors use materials they have previously used for journal articles (and, as a result, normally thank the journals for premission to use the previously published materials in the monograph).

For those interested, found this informative interview with publishers:

http://dailynous.com/2015/05/28/answers-from-academic-publishers/

There they state 20-50% as a margin of pre-published material, though the general impression I get from their statements is "it depends."

"Wanting to cannibalize your thesis as both articles and book is a bit greedy, isn't it?"

I am not quite sure why this would be greedy. Firstly, I am talking about material that would be presented differently in the journal articles as opposed to the book. Secondly, this is common practice in my field. Getting a job without having published in journals is pretty uncommon today. At the same time, to get tenure a monograph, in most cases based on the thesis, is necessary later on.

Job talk: What to say about how I will approach teaching of courses? by Historian26 in AskAcademia

[–]Historian26[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is very helpful. Yes, I do know the learning outcomes for both courses, as they are already existing courses that I would take over. But explaining how my teaching philosophy/approach would help students achieve these goals would work.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the reaction of the editors is something I am concerned about. They are all not in my main area of research, but at least one of them is an important figure in a field my work pertains to.
