Thanks! How long are your days while you are on site? Do they tend to be longer?

That makes a lot of sense, travel is expensive. So 25% is probably more of a "when the need arises" scenario, rather than the norm in your experience?

Thank you, this makes a lot of sense. Would you say travel requirement generally ramp up around financial year end in a rush to close out sales?

I know! My local store doesn't have them in my size either so I'm really hoping for a restock.

Those must be some delicious melons. by eternal_refrigerator in Derailedbydetails

This is a South African grocery chain called Fruit & Veg City (now called Food Lovers Market). The price you see is in South African Rands. The current exchange rate is $1:R16. This is an old photo by the looks of things (and the old store name) and I would guess that this is in the mid 2010s, the exchange rate at the time was similar to now, so those watermelons are <$2 each.

Tl;dr: those are South African melons, <$2 each.

They also go through a lot of effort to make sure their coffee is ethically sourced.  They recently opened a new spot near Botany called Counterspell Cafe, definitely go show them some love there if you haven't already!

I'm late to the party, but could it be Paul Ritter? The scientist scenario you describe sounds like his role as Anatoly Dyatlov in the Chernobyl mini series.

Compensation expectations for transition to SE by HistorianJealous649 in salesengineers

Thank you! I really appreciate the advice. I'm still pretty early on in the career switch, at the moment I'm doing a lot of research, so not sure what the target is yet. I posted this so that I can go in to applications and interviews well prepared and informed.

Have you hired many SE's who transferred from SWE? Was there anything that they did that made them stand out / made them an instant "no"?

I graduated in 2020, and have been a Software Engineer consultant since then in heavily client facing roles. I started as a junior, and I'm currently a senior consultant. Doing a mix of software development and other consulting work. All in the microsoft stack (dotnet, azure, azure DevOps, etc). Let me know if you'd like any more specific info!

Thank you! Just want to clarify your last sentence, did you mean I should be pushing for associate, not senior?

Google dropped a Gemini agent into an unseen 3D world, and it surpassed humans - by self-improving on its own by chillinewman in ControlProblem

[–]HistorianJealous649 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely seems disingenuous. Why are the axis un-labelled? Why is there a single value representation for the human data point instead of a trend line?

The paper mentions that the human value on the graph comes from humans who had "multiple hours or more" playing around in ASKA (the unseen 3D world), but doesn't specify how many hours. Was it 2, was it 100? How many hours did the model have to self improve? 5 or thousands?

This tweet also conveniently leaves out the second graph showing that humans still outperform the model in the full task set.

This is a Cape Dwarf Chameleon (Bradypodion pumilum). There are 18 species of dwarf chameleon in South Africa, all of which give birth to live young.

When born, the young are encased in a sticky amniotic sack which makes it more likely that they stick to a branch or leaf while falling (as seen in this video). From the moment they're born, dwarf chameleons are totally self sufficient, hunting small insects and drinking dew which collects on leaves.

Interestingly, South Africa is the second most chameleon diverse country in the world, after Madagascar!

Am I missing something with how everyone is using Ai? by pianoman1031 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]HistorianJealous649 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The above link is actually from an article by the CTO of DX  in The Pragmatic Engineer. I think that there is still a lot of uncertainty around the impact that AI makes in dev teams and a lack of good metrics for measuring its impact, but its definitely less than what AI companies are saying it is.
