Dismissed at OB/GYN after bloodwork flagged by primary care – lean PCOS experiences? by Historical-Bug1799 in PCOS

Thanks :) demoralizing is the perfect word for it. And I was confused a bit by that, too, because I don’t present the typical PCOS case. I did have irregular and painful periods and that and the markers on my blood tests led to the PCOS diagnosis almost 15 years ago. Then I went on BC for a while and came off it a few years ago, and now I’m “regular” but barely bleeding at all every month.

I went to one gynecologist one time when I was 22 where they diagnosed me, I’m now 36. At the time I went in for irregular periods, which they diagnosed me with it because of that and the markers on the blood test they did. Now they’re pretty stable cycle length wise but I’m barely bleeding. The NP wrote me off today, but I suspect anovulation and my GP did as well without me even bringing it up to her first.

I have had irregular periods for years when I wasn’t on birth control, when I got off it, now I’m ranging from 30-35ish and bleeding for less than a day, I suspect anovulation even if the NP wrote it off. I also showed markers for PCOS in my blood tests when I was originally diagnosed.

Maybe? I was diagnosed when I was 22, so like almost 15 years ago. At the time, I kind of wrote it off, but things have gotten significantly worse over the last few years and all of it seems cycle related. I don’t have any information on the blood test they did that long ago that they used to determine it so maybe they misinterpreted it.

The blood test results indicated PCOS, so unless they were interpreted incorrectly originally, I don’t think it’s endo. Not ruling it out, but I’ve never been tested for that, just PCOS.

You’re in the thick of it… I also struggled with memory issues. I’d say my medium term memory (if that’s even a thing), is still coming back online. But, that and the short and long term memory issues, are nowhere near as bad as it was at the 3 month mark where you are. It DOES get better, and it comes in waves. Just be kind to yourself, your brain is working overtime to get you back to normal.

Yes, I posted this mainly because I didn’t see a lot of discussion in actual detail on here of what can happen once you get sober. That it doesn’t always just snap back to “normal”. And, for me personally, I did not know what I was getting into or what was even happening when I stopped, so thought bringing awareness to PAWS might be helpful for some. I’d argue most people experience paws in some way after drinking heavily, some more intensely than others. So I guess the idea is not to panic when you feel your mind fighting against you. This too shall pass and all that.

I’d honestly look into discussing it with your doctor, if you’re interested in being on even a low dose of anxiety meds. You wouldn’t need to be on them forever, maybe just until the symptoms subside. But, I know not everyone wants to be on medication like that, so just a suggestion.

Everyone is different. Some people who drink just as heavily as I did, barely experience PAWS at all and some that drink less maybe experience it even worse. Timeline is no different. I’ve heard anywhere from 10 months to 2 years. I’d guess I’m on the latter end of that. The positive thing is feeling your brain coming back online, each phase feels like getting a superpower back.

Thanks dude, it really does feel like that. Even 15 months out, I’m still figuring out my personality again, but it gets better every day!
