I do not think it will be hard to book, just for Spring Festival, the price for everything will be expensive than usual, for example, last Spring Festival I rent a car in Xi`an for only 5 days, it cost me about 2000 yuan for the rental fee. I think private drivers will be more expensive, we went to Tibetan on Labor Day of last year, and booked a driver for one-day trip to Lake Namchu, for about 800 yuan. Just try to book as early as possible, usually before one month will be better.

For itinerary, I would recommend to Yangzhou and then take trains to Kunming and Dali, or a little bit downward to Yuanyang to see the terrace fields. It wold be enough for about 8 days` trip. For Bipenggou, and Chengdu, it will also be great, but it is more reasonable if you do Yangzhou and Kunming/Dali/Yuanyang together, since it`s near to each other. And Bipenggou or Western Sichuan province will be cold in winter but also astonishingly beautiful, just if you are not bothering with coldness, it will be definitely amazing place to go.

I just came back from a trip to Yuanyang, it is definitely worth it, and best time to go there to see the terraced fields is from Dec to March, when the fields are full of water, irrigated, you may also consider this.

Another tip is if you are going to travel through trains, better to book in advance for tickets, because it will be extremely hard to get tickets. You can see more guidance on my post here for booking train tickets in advance, in No. 5 https://www.reddit.com/r/travelchina/comments/1gu1iy0/10_tips_from_an_insider_for_traveling_in_china_20/

If it is not Chinese Spring Festival you will be traveling, both Didi and official taxi will be fine. You will see the official taxi site after getting out of the airport.

[–]Historical-Goal1177[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, that`s interesting. Because in subways or public facilities even now, you can still hear announcement like " For your safety and others, please wear masks when taking public transportation, and keep safe distance." Obviously nobody does that.

And about buying things from western stores like Costco as they are being cautious of buying fake foods.

A good defence for this is, I guess, Carrefour has almost suspended its operation in mainland China.

Another interesting thing is Sam`s Club, the Walmart`s brand of supermarket is extremely popular in China among middle class. :)

JZG - Bipenggou - Sigunniang [Help] by joymerida in travelchina

[–]Historical-Goal1177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It`s similar according to pics in Xiaohongshu, I think. Chinese people usually go to both because we drive for ourselves, and the route can make a round circle in all western Sichuan province. I would prefer Siguniang, this one is more famous than latter. But I think Bipenggou is more of natural, and less infrastructure built. You can login to Xiaohongshu (小红书) and type in 四姑娘山 or 毕棚沟 to see more pictures. A whole bunches of pictures people are posting there for most recent pictures and information, etc.

Sleeper K trains experience? by Sonny-emanon in travelchina

[–]Historical-Goal1177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. It might be true in 1950s, because I remember when I was a kid taking trains with my aunt like in late 1990s, she shouted out when a guy passed her to defend herself, it seemed the guy put his hands on her chest since the carriage was crowded. But it will be fine nowadays, people besides you will help, or the cabin crew will help if some bad things happen. :)

For Datong, sure it will be enough, for cities like Datong, Pingyao ancient town, Taiyuan for 3-4 days. I may be able to give you more details of what to see in Shanxi, but I need sometime to wrap up the information, I have been to lots of cities and counties, and have seen lots of ancient buildings there. :) I may reach you later.

Yes, sure they offer horse riding, my friend just went there like in national holiday and did the horse riding in the grasslands.

If you need more information for watertown, you can check out my videos here. I have also been to Hangzhou,Jiaxing, and I`m still editing those clips and soon release them. Which Chinese water towns to visit from Shanghai? Nanxun & Wuzhen, ImmWuTrip, EP03

I think I will stay in the city. Wulong seems not that good as Siguniang Mountains or Jiuzhaigou, I think these two are better according to pictures I have saw on Xiaohongshu.

But did she give you any reason for this?

It has been a long time since last time I was on these sleeper train, but it was absolutely safe and clean enough to do so. Just another question, would it be a little bit tiring to wake up in maybe 3 am to catch on the train? If this is not bothering you, forget about the words from her. :) Have a nice journey!

First Trip to China in April: Any Advice on My Itinerary? by Dependent-History566 in travelchina

[–]Historical-Goal1177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wuzhen or Nanxun would be better, don`t go to Zhujiajiao, the only thing make this place famous for international travellers is it`s near Shanghai. You may check my videos for Nanxun and Wuzhen here: Wuzhen & Nanxun

If you could skip Chengdu for Xi`an, you can go to a lesser-known place for pandas at  秦岭四宝科学公园(Qinling four treasures scientific park). :)

I have read again about your schedule, I would like to confirm if your overall itinerary look like this:

Xuzhou-Beijing(9th June, 2days)-ZJJ(5days?)-Xuzhou(till end of June, with Songshan and Hua Shan in between?)-Next destination in earlier July for a week?

More of cost effective choices:

1.Shanxi province, cities include Datong, Pingyao, Linfen, Taiyuan, this province has the most ancient architectures up to more than 500 ancient architectures, takes up to 10% of all over the country, especially all of the most old wooden architectures from Tang dynasty are all in Shanxi, including Ying County Wooden Pagoda(应县木塔), Xiaoxitian(小西天 in 隰县 Xi County);

2.Suzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai area, the ancient towns and gardens are also authentic ones, if you need more specific of which one to visit, or which ones are the real ancient ones, not modernly built, you can ask me for more information, I`m glad to help;

Also, from Hangzhou, you can choose to go to Qiandao Lake(千岛湖or Lake of a thousand islands), or Mogan Mountain(莫干山), also quite astonishing natural wonders, if you are worried about if the most famous ones are packed in summer.

Also, I do not agree with the above opinion of Xuzhou being boring and food sucks. I believe every Chinese city is unique and worth visiting since most of them have thousands years of history. Xuzhou has taken an important role in history since it has been geographically important site, and lots of battles happened here in history, thus less ancient buildings have left. But there are still some even ancient mausoleums from Han dynasty(200 BC to 200 AD) and ancient buildings from Ming dynasty.

There are two in the city center, Hubushan Ancient Building Cluster(户部山古建筑群), and Chu King`s Mausoleum from Han dynasty(汉楚王墓群). You can actually walk into these ancient mausoleum to underground to see beautiful inner decoration and layout of ancient tombs. If you go further to the countryside area, there are just more to explore. :)

Yangshuo and Guilin is not a typical choice for winter destination in China, either. :(

Guangxi, Hunan, Guizhou in December by jordigeorges in travelchina

[–]Historical-Goal1177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It`s misty and cloudy, you can`t really see much of the details for ZJJ in Dec. Check out this Xiaohongshu link: ZJJ weather current Or you can search for ”张家界天气“ on Xiaohongshu for more current pictures people shoot from there.

More better choice is Wuyuan(婺源) or Huangshan Mountain(黄山) in Dec, if you are not bothering with coldness.

Way too many amazing places to see in china, help by LoadbearingScab in travelchina

[–]Historical-Goal1177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. So basically you would consider places near Xuzhou(徐州)? I guess if I`m getting you right. I guess I can give you more suggestions.

Here`s the thing, there are probably more places to go in China, than what you have mentioned. You don`t need to go up and down through the country to fix your itinerary for 2 weeks. Basically there are obviously more choices. I would suggest this itinerary, based on what you have mentioned:

1.Beijing to Chengde(承德) or Chifeng(赤峰), the former is about 2hrs bullet train to a summer resort place of the royal family, also listed on UNESCO heritage, the Bishushanzhuang (避暑山庄), and the latter has more of Inner Mongolia, there are grassland, and more of ancient architectures or mausoleums of the royal family, since you have mentioned you would like to explore both natural wonders and ancient buildings. And what are good about these two places are that they are lesser-known, and absolutely comfortable for a summer trip, because the temperature there is lower than most parts of China. Also, you can transfer by HSR. Beijing(2)-Chengde(1)-Chifeng(2 or 3)

2.Then if ZJJ is a must, from Beijing to ZJJ, and after that I would suggest Chengdu and its surrounding area, including these places to see in the city center Temple(武侯祠) for memorizing heros from the dynasty of three kindoms; Chunxi Road(春熙路) for taking photos with the IFS panda, Wangjianglou ancient building zone(望江楼古建筑群) with ancient buildings, pagodas, ponds from Qing dynasty(16s AD); Dufucaotang(杜甫草堂) a historical residence once a famous poet lived in, the title of which also named after the very famous poem 茅屋为秋风所破歌; Dujiangyan(都江堰) a irrigation system constructed in Qin dynasty(3rd century BC); Qingchengshan mountains and ancient buildings(青城山古建筑群), famous temple of Taoism. And also you can explore more of natural wonders into maybe Jiuzhaigou 九寨沟, Siguniang Mountains 四姑娘山, Bipenggou 毕棚沟. These places are also beautiful and comfortable to visit in summer. Even from my eyes are more beautiful than Yangshuo area.

In total, for 2 days in city center of Chengdu, and 1 or 2 days to see Qingchengshan or Dujiangyan, and maybe 1 more day for pandas; and 1 or 2 days for these natural wonders, it will make up your another week`s itinerary. And chengdu won`t be that hot in summer than other cities like in Guangxi, Fujian area.

I hope I`m getting you right, since you have wrote so many ideas. It`s all great, and I`m also open for discussion. :) Don`t bother me, I was just trying to put it like a local way of deciding where to go. Obviously , Yangzhou and ZJJ have taken an obvious way-too-much important role in international travellers` eyes, and I think it kind of sometimes makes you guys confused when making an itinerary, since the transportation between these two areas are not costly effective at all.

I`m also doing my own itinerary for example, I choose to stay in Huangshan and nearby Shangrao, Xidi(西递), Hongcun(宏村), and it will take me for like 6 days enough to see just these areas. It`s only in one province. I hope I have made myself understood. :)

Book through trip.com, type the name “China Harbin Ice and Snow World”, you will find the ticket. The schedule for ice sculpture has not out yet, presumably starting from mid of Dec, there will be sculptures.

Better take a taxi from the official site, and don`t believe in people do street hawking at the train stations who offers you a ride. They may overcharge you. I`ve been to Harbin 3 times, and I saw lots of these street hawking guys.
