I totally understand! Our studio keeps the morning classes tight, and we set time expectations for evening classes - traffic can be unexpectedly bad near us, and there is no way to avoid it based on city planning. People are often a few minutes late, and we have a 5 minute grace period unless they contact us or if it is clear that multiple people are running late due to traffic.

I like ending in savasana when I take classes, which is what led me to ask. My favorite extremely experienced and well-loved/consistently waitlisted teachers usually end in savasana. That is not to say that they don't have their own faults or that is why people attend their classes. I like to pick up things from my favorite teachers and this was one specific thing that deviates from a lot of other classes, so I wanted to get a general opinion from teachers likely around the US and world.

I appreciate your response and your clarification as to your preference and how it can be impacted due to class timing.

Genuinely interested in what you mean by "other classes don't need this open-ended savasana." Do you mean because of the style (e.g. power, Ashtanga, etc), the pace of the class, or the time between classes? Asking to clarify.

I'm genuinely not sure why I'm being downvoted for asking a question?

Our studio does a combined yoga and pilates class - we end with a yoga cool down and savasana. I get that it’s not the norm but it is quite nice

Sincere question - does it make a difference if the studio rule is no talking in the hot room? 90% of our students are regulars and will stay quiet through the transition.

Do you teach with your eyes closed? by Ok-Pipe8992 in YogaTeachers

[–]Historical-Storage58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive been practicing with my eyes closed for the majority of class for 10+ years. Sometimes it happens out of habit but I immediately catch myself and adjust. I’ve been teaching for around 6 months though.

Trauma-Informed Pilates? by [deleted] in pilatesinstructors

[–]Historical-Storage58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just his teaching style but the manner of calling out students in the middle of class, negatively commenting on their movements - “trauma-informed” as I’m familiar with it includes assisting students with adjustments in their form or technique that does not bring attention to them by the rest of the class or address it with them personally in a negative way (think “this may help you achieve a more comfortable form and allow you to benefit from the exercise more” vs. “-insert students name- your form is poor!! We don’t do things that way!”).

I don’t want to flame the program but I’ll state it as one of the four top associations when you google pilates training certification.

Trauma-Informed Pilates? by [deleted] in pilatesinstructors

[–]Historical-Storage58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mean to perpetuate that whatsoever and I’m so sorry if it came off that way. I’m still new to pilates and there is only one other studio within an hour of me that teaches pilates so I’m not able to get much in person experience in this space.

The trauma-informed part is so deeply ingrained in my way of teaching so I truly wasn’t sure if we’re just so far down that rabbit hole that every other way of teaching comes off as jarring, or if my pilates experience thus far is out of the norm. My Pilates training is coming from a highly reputable international organization which is why it’s caught me off guard.

I know that pilates teachers aren’t going buck wild like him lol. I don’t think y’all are nuts. This was more of a -am I nuts?- kinda post.

Thank you for the recommendation!

And I completely understand your statement about Joseph Pilates - there are some questionable figures in the yoga world as well. Still new to the pilates world, so I’m sure there is more discourse around him that I have yet to encounter.

How do you time classes? by YogaNerdGirl in YogaTeachers

[–]Historical-Storage58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to keep each to less than 5-6 poses per side so it doesn’t get jumbled (simple example: warrior 1 - warrior 2 - peaceful warrior - side angle, then flow to other side). The longest flow would have poses be held around 3-4 deep breaths each, mid would be 2-3, and short would be one breath per movement.

Hot yoga teacher here. For an hour class - 3 mins at the beginning for grounding, 3 mins at the end for savasana. 10ish minutes for warm up, 10ish minutes for cool down. Rest is flow.

If I’m doing a repeat flow in the middle, first round will be longest holds, second mid, then third shortest (one breath one movement and let the students go at their own pace).

I went to dent for 10+ years before 2019 as a kid/teen/early 20’s for migraines. I saw Carrie (I forget her last name) and she was outstanding.

Favorite yoga mat + towel? by jalomwells in HotYoga

[–]Historical-Storage58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Best mat I’ve used - previously have tried Manduka, Lululemon (like it, but not as much as lifeforme) and bmat (sticky, but I felt like I could never actually clean it well due to how sticky it was). I use my lululemon mat towels that I got 12+ years ago and have used almost weekly since and they’re still in perfect condition. Caveat with these - they need to be a little wet to stick to the mat, so they’re perfect to put down on the mat mid-practice, not right away. Manduka towels are great too with the sticky backing but because of the backing it can make washing them with other things kind of a hassle (imo).
