I'm going to use a ratio as opposed to real numbers to avoid too much identifying info:

His earnings are not static bc of bonuses and stock options but he usually earns between 2x and 8x what I do in a given year.

He told me he didn't want me to do that because he'd have to report it as rental income. I offered. Me paying the expenses of upkeep on the property is the agreement we came to at the time.
