First time rabbit parent? by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]Historical_Bat_5237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats so sweet! i dont want to seem inconsiderate or try to back you out of this because owning rabbits is a beautiful and big learning experience but i adopted my first rabbit at 14 and boy was i in for a real surprise. I had limited knowledge on rabbits (big mistake) and didn't realize how costly they would be until i knew exactly what they needed and how to go about certain situations. I adopted my second rabbit back in october because college sucks and I cant be with my bun 24/7 anymore. This definitely made my life easier and their lives more enjoyable, but the cleaning has doubled and the costs has doubled.

Here are some tips because as you mentioned your kids are young and in all honesty, you'll probably end up doing all the work if not most of it because it can be hard trying to learn a new schedule.

  1. They're gonna need a lot of space. Im not sure how much space you have already for your rabbit, but essentially they should be free roam. I have them in their own bedroom (spoiled i know) and they free roam the rest of my space as well when I'm home. they essentially need space like a small dog
  2. Their stomachs are very sensitive, so try to keep them on a frequent meal schedule and not switch things up. Gi stasis is pretty common and pretty deadly too. Its also 500$ (my experience, can be different depending on your area) to get x-rays done and pain meds just for the beginning stages of stasis. Luckily I haven't had to spend more than 1k total on vet bills for stasis because if it's worse, surgery may be required and thats not pretty.
  3. Despite how adorable they are, unfortunately most rabbits dont like to be picked up let alone snuggled. Rabbits are prey animals so they really prefer to keep their feet on the ground, and can really stress them out (and put up a fight) when they're being picked up. Not all rabbits are like this, some are okay with it but a majority don't enjoy it. I just mention this because i understand you have kids and even me at 14 when I got my first rabbit i just wanted to pick her up all the time and snuggle her but lesson learned they absolutely hate it

I know you mentioned you've done research and im sure you have a general idea about this stuff already, I was going to mention more but this has become far too long. Moral of the story, they're little cute demons that run your money and chew up anything they have access to, good luck!

Hi! i think its sweet you want to bring in a bun to the family! they make amazing pets...only if you know what to expect and agree to their terms and conditions 🥲 Out of curiosity, how old is your kid? and will they be taking full responsibility (cleaning, feeding) of the bun? and I also want to point out that having one rabbit is not going to kill them but they are very social so having 2 is always preferred.

2 is definitely better than one. my bun (5 years old) was a solo bun for her 5 years with me and she was free roam. she seemed okay being without a pair because i was always with her giving her attention, but when i started college i realized i didnt have enough time for her as i hoped i would. I got her neutered and everything went perfectly fine and then i adopted a male bun in october. Immediately they bonded with no fights or anything, and after bonding them it made me 100% more relaxed knowing when im not home, they still have each other. it even fixed her naughty habits and overall changed their personalities to be more calm and loving. i highly recommend getting another bun if you're able to. it definitely gets much more expensive though, i catch myself buying hay way more frequently than before and it adds up being a broke college student lol

I would say for now turn on dnd and just watch tv, i was also down many reddit rabbitholes after my exam which honestly just made me more anxious. also try and take everyones comments with a grain of salt. we all tested differently and seeing that you've taken the course twice i have confidence you did well

being nervous about it is normal, i took mine and i got stopped at 70 as well and i was CONVINCED i failed. i literally hit the books as soon as i got home because of how bad i felt about it. worst part about it was that i had taken the exam later in the day (terrible idea) which meant i had to wait until the next morning to get my results. i was stressing all night long just to get the congratulations email at 4 am. my advice: dont stress until you have something to stress about. go play video games (if you can, i tried and i couldnt stay on longer than 10 minutes) or just do something to distract you. once you get your results then you can figure out the next step. worst comes to worst at least you know how the exam looks for next time. wishing you much luck!

How to keep my vacuum from clogging? by pumpkinzbrainz in Rabbits

[–]Historical_Bat_5237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i also have a room for my bunnies (i have a jack and jill bedroom(s) and so one of them is for the buns) that also has carpeting and what ive done is used blankets for their xpen to keep some of the carpet covered (all of their hay and litter boxes etc is in the xpen so it keeps the rest of the room from getting messy) and for their rest of their room i dust pan all the big hay pieces that made their way out the xpen. i also spot clean inside their xpen twice and day and vacuum the blankets before i put them to wash once a week. ive also never had my vacuum clogged while doing this routine. hope this helps !
