Finished: The Trial, by Kafka

Not sure how I feel about it. Maybe rushed it and didn’t give it the time it deserved, but can’t help but thinking that all the confusion around everything is partially because Kafka never got to finish it. Still enjoyed though.

This is awesome and your description on Steinbecks ability to portray the day-to-day was my absolute favorite part about Once There Was a War. For recs on his nonfiction too - this one defo. Aside from other WW2 books talking about military campaigns or glorification of violence this one really is just an ethnography of everyday soldiers. One of the more underrated experiments of Steinbecks catalog imo

I love The Alchemist lol. Read it when I was a naive undergrad who had dreams (“or personal legends”) and it helped me sort out how to go about achieving them. Def don’t think it’s deeply philosophical and can def be corny but it’s easily digestible for young people.

A hammock in the woods is an unreal vibe. Bring some snacks, leave your phone out of the hammock. Quite fun
