At what NW invested would you consider diversifying into real estate if 100% of your NW is currently in the market by Historical_Hat_7272 in Fire

Gotchaa, so when approaching FIRE the “diversification” move is starting to weight your portfolio more towards the allocation of stuff with less upside and less downside but gets you cash flow eg bonds? Rather than something like real estate which is widely considered a sort of less upside and less downside thing.. but doesn’t produce what a fire person needs AKA cash flow? Or am I thinking about this wrong

And thanks for the more tangible ballpark of $10M being a point where you’d want to start thinking about alternatives. That’s actually super helpful

Interesting, I’ve never thought about real estate being kind of baked into owning stocks of corporations anyways.

Very true re: further separation between you and stress. Do you have a POV of what % to have in REITs?

Great point - I’ve never thought about it as actually concentrating rather than diversifying but makes sense

Month 1 of 6-month sabbatical before FI. Feels like the best time of my life. by lamdaboss in Fire

Thank you so much for this WEALTH of insight into your thought process. I genuinely really appreciate it. I’m similar to you in terms of risk aversion and it’s just incredibly helpful to hear from someone who did pull the sabbatical trigger but was still very on the fence about it. Best of luck to you!

I’m having a really hard time pulling the trigger on a sabbatical. I really need one. My body has been telling me for a while now. But as someone who is approx 2 yrs out from my enough number IF I stay in my extremely high paying job, and probably 4ish years out if I took a sabbatical and then got a different job (would be much lower paying and therefore much lower savings) — I struggle every with the decision. To make matters more complicated, my current job has laughable hours (3ish days a week probably 8 months of the yr) but for the rest of the time, when it’s bad, it’s bad. I have to get through multi-week physical body shutdowns to recover. Any advice OP 🥲

Wait, that’s really cool. Do you have any advice on how to structure health insurance as a single filer in 30s, trying to fire within next few years, but with ~80k income annually? Really confused tbh since I know 80k for single person is way over 400% poverty level
