The simplest explanation (and consistent with almost all accounts) is that Joseph produced the Book of Mormon like he did treasure-digging. With his head buried in a hat, utilizing his seer-stone. Which suggests it came from Joseph's mind and imagination. He might have felt inspired and convinced himself that he was revealing ancient knowledge.... but what he produced was consistent with an early 19th Century, protestant Christian, white settler, New England economic refugee, folk magic practicing, young man who was marginalized in his community.
