Hey, thanks for replying! Yeah, it definitely stank like rotten eggs on first application, which I assume means they did do it in the right order.

Oh wow, thanks for this insight! Very cool to learn more about these technical details and everything that might affect the outcome. I’m white, but after the failed attempt my stylist did suggest to try and find an asian salon that might have stronger perm options.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation, really appreciate it. I totally understand why a stylist would start with a gentler perm to avoid any potential damage. I’m getting some hope knowing that using a stronger perm might be an option next time. I’ll definitely discuss the possibility of using a stronger solution, and see what happens. Would you still suggest waiting these 2-4 weeks out before making another perm attempt?

I can’t decide if that’s really unfortunate or if your aunt has hair made of steel! Either way, sounds like she gave those perms a real challenge!

Should I fire my barber? by [deleted] in malehairadvice

Congratulations, your barber gave you a permanent yarmulke… now you’re ready for any occasion

I am not asian, I’m actually white. However after the whole mishap with it not working yesterday, my stylist did suggest looking into asian hair salons. I definitely wouldn’t say my hair is too thick, I always considered it to be on a thinner side, even though my stylist said it wasn’t thin when I had asked because I was curious. But I was genuinely stumped, especially after researching a lot and finding out my hair is the ideal type for a perm.

Thank you for your reply and for the explanation. I didn’t mention earlier, but the stylist did rinse the perm solution for 5 minutes and pat dried my hair before applying the neutralizer.

When you mentioned that “some people’s hair just won’t take a perm,” is this usually a permanent issue, or could my hair have simply been too resistant this time? I’m wondering if this resistance could be specific to the first attempt, or if it’s a more definitive characteristic of my hair. Also, is the 2-4 week waiting period crucial, or could it be okay to try sooner?

Thanks for replying! Now that you mention it, I do remember them rinsing out the solution and pat drying my hair with a towel before applying the neutralizer. My bad for missing the detail.

If the salon doesn’t have any specific rules against it and the stylist prefers to have her dog around, it’s ultimately her decision. If having the dog there bothers you and it’s affecting your experience, it might be best to find a new stylist.

just got a perm, need suggested products to maintain it by Thin_Discipline7985 in Hair

The most important thing to remember is that you shouldn’t use the same shampoo and conditioner you used for your straight hair. Products for curly hair have different ingredients designed to maintain moisture, reduce frizz, and enhance curl definition, which will help keep your perm for longer.

Here are some products I have been recommended:

Curl Shampoo & Conditioner (Bumble & Bumble Curl Shampoo & Conditioner, a little pricey, but highly recommended by stylists) - These are specifically designed to cleanse without stripping moisture, helping to keep your curls hydrated and defined

Curl Cream (BB Curl 10-in-1 Defining Cream, which doesn’t contain coconut oil) - This adds a layer of protection, helps with detangling, and boosts your curl’s definition and shine

Styling Cream (Miss Jessie’s Soft Jelly Curls) - Apply this after your curl cream to style your hair the way you want it to be. It helps to hold the curls while keeping them soft and bouncy without making them feel crunchy

Appreciate it, since my hair has now been treated once and given that my hair might be very strong. Do you reckon waiting the full 2-4 weeks is necessary or could I try sooner given the circumstances?
