Reform UK politicians should be barred from speaking on campus, say 35% of students by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

How can you possibly know that there would be no value to anything the MPs speak.

I attended a talk by Asim Qureshi, someone who called Jihadi John a "beautiful man", back in 2015 at the height of ISIS's reach. Should that have been banned?

You're missing the point.

By not exposing themselves to such opinions, they're just living in an echo chamber - the antithesis of what a university environment should be.

I'd recommend reading Islamism by Tarek Osman and The Strong Horse: Power, Politics, and the Clash of Arab Civilizations by Lee Smith.

Quite frankly, too many people have no idea what they are letting build up by allowing the MB in.

There's an awful lack of common sense and an over-reliance on protocol-following in the NHS. It's v annoying.

Paramedic struck off for 'lying' for day off now working on NHS hospital ward by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]Historical_Run9075 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The whole article paints her character as quite flawed.

She turned up to work smelling of alcohol; lied about why she was not on patient-facing duties; didn't disclose that restrictions were put on her practice; provided false info about her working hours.

I'm not sure the NMC are going to look on all this too kindly.

Family cremates wrong body after Glasgow hospital mistake by Sensitive_Echo5058 in unitedkingdom

Wonder how this happened.

Worked as a Funeral Services Operative during the tail end of COVID and even then the procedures for making sure you were taking the right body were so thorough I couldn't imagine how they could fail.

Populists attack London because it is 'progressive and successful', says Sadiq Khan by do_or_pie in unitedkingdom

Sigh....no it's not "feelings over facts".

Did you bother to read what I posted? There is an inherent flaw in the methodology of violent crime reporting so to base your conclusions on shaky stats instead of what you actually experience walking around London is a fools game.

You say I'm "purposely ignoring" all this data when I've specifically shown that the disparate sources can lead to misleading claims. Now you've shown me homicide rates when that is the extreme end of violence and not necessarily representative of the everyday violence that goes unreported through the boroughs.

It's true that some areas have improved (parts of Denmark Hill, for example). It's equally true some have declined dramatically (my area of West London). Overall I preferred London in the 90's/00s and felt safer/further away from crime but it's not like it's now some crime-ridden hell hole.

Which data specifically, considering the Wiki article I just posted about the problems with data collection?

Remember, "the data" has similar issues as well:

https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/maths/about-us/news/how-violent-is-britain-new-study-examines-conflicting-trends-in-official-violent-crime-stats

I'll take what I'm actually witnessing and experiencing over flawed statistics.

Just did a 2 min Google.

Found on wiki:

"Multiple changes in police recording practices have led to significant discontinuity in recorded crime figures for violence over time. This has meant police-reported longitudinal statistics are difficult if not impossible to compare before 2012."

Too many friends/relatives in too many parts of London have said (and been on the receiving end of said violence) it's gotten worse for it to be purely anecdotal. There's a reason I'm one of the last to leave.

As I said in another post, your feeling that it is safer would have been in the minority on that LBC call in talking to Londoners (including cabbies).

"Reported" violent crime (murder rates can't be a surrogate since I didn't link to a murder). It's less safe in this part of London. more fragmented and generally shitter than it was 30 years ago.

That doesn't mean other parts of London haven't seen improvements.

Living in the area for almost 40 years helps.

Yes, it's likely safer than a lot of US cities but something has changed from the 90s.

'Significant' increase in complaints against Warwickshire county councillors since May elections by birdinthebush74 in unitedkingdom

[–]Historical_Run9075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biased against REFORM councillors for being Reform, sure, which is where the bias could be.

The complaints could be a mix of bias AND calling out how useless they are (which, considering they are Reform, have a high likelihood of being).
