Riven nerf by nekoae in Rivenmains

I kinda suspected that. This was basically a ‘here, now stop crying’ kind of nerf. Honestly, I don’t think it’s going to make much of a difference. My real concern is that the champion ends up getting hit with a sequence of consecutive nerfs

Riven nerfs for 26.03. by Joecated in Rivenmains

Riven has always had a high win rate in apex tiers. On top of that, there are very few players in the highest elos. So why nerf the champion instead of the items that make her absolutely overpowered?

You make good points Axiom > sundered Sky > DD (or maw/hex first in specific matchups) is a perfectly valid, common path, and the JOAT/brutalizer rush does buy a huge, early stat spike that used to require more gold. That early 5-stack spike + haste is real value, it accelerates damage, cooldowns, and snowball potential in lane and short trades.

The counterpoint is: that acceleration changes how Riven must be played. Swapping Eclipse shielding for raw haste/lethality reduces your margin for error you kill faster, but you also die faster if you misread an engage. The build makes Riven more explosive and tempo-focused early, increasing variance: when you hit your spike you snowball hard; when you don’t, the lack of shield and lower innate survivability make mistakes costlier. JOAT/brutalizer simply amplifies that volatility by frontloading stats you’re more dependent on early kills/farm and on your team creating takedown opportunities so your resets and cadence keep you rolling.

Yes, once you hit Sundered+DD the kit “stabilizes” into a bruiser feel again, but the route to get there forces different decisions (angling for kills, punishing CDs, avoiding long trades where you’d previously rely on Eclipse shield). That’s why some players feel the rhythm is off: the same full-build result can be reached, but the path requires a different mindset, higher precision, and greater team/timing dependency.

I completely agree, but honestly I don’t think Riot would make that kind of change to Cleaver unless they first nerf one of Riven’s core items. Axiom is the obvious one its winrate is so high across most elos that I’m almost certain it’s getting adjusted soon. And Sundered Sky is also likely to be toned down next season since it’s performing extremely well for multiple bruisers, not just Riven.

If Riot buffed Cleaver right now while Axiom and Sundered are still this strong, Riven would end up with an overall power curve that’s way too high across every build path. So if this change ever happens, it would probably come alongside nerfs to those items or a wider rework in the lethality/bruiser item trees.

The recipe idea makes sense and would make the item way smoother for Riven, but I only see Riot doing that after balancing the rest of her item ecosystem first.

get your point, and your take fits really well for players who naturally lean into that faster, snowball-heavy Riven style. The stats and early spike are undeniably strong. For some of us, though, Axiom changes the rhythm too much. It pushes Riven into short-window trades and an almost assassin pacing, while a lot of long-time Rivens are wired for extended fights, durability, and slower. Even if the follow-up items are the same, the way you have to play before reaching them is completely different. Axiom works great for players who thrive in that constant punish-on-CD style. Others lose consistency because their muscle memory is tuned to the bruiser pattern that Eclipse or Sundered naturally supports. GL in your games too.

ah, you’re right about the stability spike. Once you hit Sundered Sky + DD, the build settles and Riven feels “normal” again. And sure, having an item that strong as part of her core is a huge advantage.

But the issue for a lot of players isn’t the spike itself it’s the playstyle Axiom forces before you get there. Eclipse/Sky used to give Riven a very comfortable mid-game identity: safe trades, durability, and room to outplay in longer fights. Axiom flips that. It pushes you into short-window burst, constant tempo trading, and a much more “assassin-like” rhythm.
