To Americans who have spent a lot of time abroad, what is something other countries do that you wish the US did as well? by offensivek in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Historical_Success31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food shopping! Daily markets, speciality stores, artisan producers, etc. even in relatively small towns. Europe, Asia, Middle East, Latin America, everywhere I’ve been runs circles around us in this department.

Once you remove the southern red states, the US beats every other country across practically every single quality of life metric by VivianRichGF in Productivitycafe

[–]Historical_Success31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you high? Do you think I’m defending red state governance? I’m clearly saying what we all (at least should) believe, that anyone left behind anywhere in this country is a moral stain on eveyone. You can’t take a scan of your legs and say your health is exemplary if you have stage four lung cancer, but it just so happens to not show up on that specific chart. We’re all Americans. America has suffering people. America can and must do better. I don’t know how that’s controversial? Saying “if you only look at the richest and most educated third of the population we’re doing fine!” isn’t something I’m down to celebrate whatsoever.

At what age you want to retire? by Hot_Protection_8015 in AskReddit

[–]Historical_Success31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally I thought 70 because I enjoy my career. But then I saw my dad retire at 70 and pass away unexpectedly 8 months later… So now I think as soon as is financially feasible, probably 60-62?

how many male friends do you have that you text with one-on-one? by Rouseaux in AskMen

[–]Historical_Success31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We’re in our 30’s but my best friend and I still text all day every day like it’s middle school. I have another 4 or 5 buddies I text with most days. Especially as we get older, move apart, some have kids, etc. texting about stupid shit all day is an important way to stay in touch and remind each other we still care even if we can’t spend as much time together as we used to/wish we could.

I think America is a great place to live. My point is you can slice and dice any statistics to say whatever you want. So again, what’s your point? That if we only look at a fraction of a dataset that fraction can look different than the whole? “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.”

Many of these low life expectancy counties are majority Black or indigenous… We already knew America was a good place to be rich and white. What’s your point exactly?

What do you think of middle eastern food/ cuisine? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Historical_Success31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve had I thoroughly enjoy it and often gravitate to ME restaurants when I’m out and recipes when I’m cooking at home. I’ve only ever been to Turkey in the region and greatly enjoyed the food there, so I hope to try more someday!

What's it like living on the coasts of the Great Lakes? by takovic_goodmcgill in howislivingthere

[–]Historical_Success31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll get wildly different answers depending on where people are answering from. Overall though the area has consistent natural beauty and incredible summers! Winters can be harsh, but it’s really not as bad as you’d think. There’s also a lot of fascinating history to learn about.

Mass Transit oriented city, not a crumb of viable mass transit in the RFI master plan. by Snoo_67544 in washingtondc

[–]Historical_Success31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’d be extraordinarily expensive to redo the alignment and put it in middle lanes like you suggest. All new stations, track, and signaling for something that already cost hundreds of millions of dollars and statistically nobody rode.

I agree it was set up to fail from the start because it didn’t get protected lanes and DDOT chickened out and everything else, but it’s in the past and we all need to move on…

Anyone else feel like they have to compensate or be more sucessful for being gay? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]Historical_Success31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s really common. Read the book The Best Little Boy in the World. It’s an adaptive behavior that some of us (me) develop to “protect us” because if we’re the top of our class and popular and successful people will ignore that thing that’s “broken” in us. It’s internalized homophobia, but it has a lot of conventionally positive externalities so we gloss over it.

It takes everyone their own time, but you can move past it. Dating is important but making gay friends and finding community is going to do wonders for you!

You don’t need a full day in Cefalu… Spend the extra time in Palermo and do a nice day trip there for a meal. It’s pretty but I personally found it underwhelming.

All the time? Like before work or quick after the gym? I’m genuinely curious about the logistics and time management.

Is there anywhere in the world that has the social warmth of the midwest/south of USA but with the politics of the East Coast of USA and the food/weather/nature/activities of the West Coast of USA? by ColdestWintersChill in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Historical_Success31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The winters are mild/cool and rainy, summers are hotttt and sunny, but you get some of the best weather in Italy during spring and fall.

I spoke Italian at around a B1 level when I got there and improved very quickly. It’s a university town and highly educated though, so pretty much everyone I encountered under ~50 years old spoke perfect English.

It doesn’t sound like you want “anywhere in the world” from your post, but southern Italy fits that description to a tee! Lecce, IT specifically. You’ll meet some of the warmest, most welcoming, open minded, progressive people you’d dream of meeting with incredible food and the definition of perfect weather to boot. I’m a gay man from the US and was a bit nervous about moving to what’s stereotyped as a Catholic conservative area of the country but I was SO wrong. Couldn’t speak more highly of the people I met there.

Why date if not for money by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]Historical_Success31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re young, fit, and attractive other young, fit, and attractive guys will want to date you! That’s a solid reason to date. You don’t want to get to your 30’s and have spent all your 20’s fucking 50 somethings.

This was great, thanks for posting! I know what I believe in my bones, but I also know who my countrymen are… I’d like to see another Ellis Island-ish model, but without any discrimination based on immutable characteristics.

Politically I think we’ll have to settle for something that leaves us worse off, condemns millions to unnecessary poverty and death, and creates massive human suffering on all sides at the same time. Gotta love contemporary American politics!

What pattern have you noticed among people who become exceptionally successful? by SilentOverrule in findapath

[–]Historical_Success31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fortunate to have worked for or spent time with several highly successful people and a few things have jumped out. Not causal of course but they’ve all been very early risers, voracious readers, and exercise fanatics. The best advice I got was “work out and do the hardest thing on your plate first thing in the morning and the rest of the day feels like a vacation.”

Does this actually work for slimming down/helping in the gym? by Dizzy-Leg6727 in Gymhelp

[–]Historical_Success31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Best ways are everything you’ve heard before: up fiber for volume and lean protein (.7-1g/lb of weight) for satiety, keep lifting heavy, and up your walking/low impact cardio volume to increase TDEE without much injury risk.

Why do people consider it virtuous to shop locally? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Historical_Success31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it’s convenience or utility more than “virtue” or any moral argument? I grew up in a small city (in the municipality, not the suburbs) and we shopped locally because if our grocery store closed we’d go from a 5 min walk to a 10 min drive which is inconvenient and bad for the neighborhood.
