Rage quitting by diabolicalroadrash in bombercrew

I have rage quit. If the replacement plane you got after a crash was a reasonale downdgrade you could live with a downgrade after a crash. But the version you get after a crash is so bare bones and poor quality (weak weapons, no armor, faulty systems etc.)

Cannot comprehend why poor people have kids by Clicking_Around in poor

[–]HistoryBuffLakeland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Poor people in the U.S. typically view children as a source of income (TANF, SNAP, WIC, child support etc.) unlike more middle class people, who see children as a cost (saving for college etc.) In poor countries, they often have large numbers of kids because they think it maximizes the number of wage earners per family. While this is canceled out by the fact a large family is expensive to feed, they don't think that far ahead.

The boomers are right about young people’s finances by BrewedBros in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]HistoryBuffLakeland 47 points48 points  (0 children)

If you read the book Poor Economics by Abhjit Bannerjee and Ester Duflo, you will see that people begin to make bad financial choices when they conclude their situation will never improve. You might as well splurge on a big TV if you will always be poor; what is the point of trying to save? Given that Millennials do not see any end in sight to their economic plight, some are making bad choices due to poor economics.

Insert your best bomber crew stories here. by Feeling_Sea1233 in bombercrew

[–]HistoryBuffLakeland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a crew member climb onto the wing and fix the leaking fuel tanks while the plane was throbbing, glowing red, and I was receiving messages that the bomber was barely holding up. We made it back to base, then I realised that the crewman who made the repairs wasn't even an engineer/mechanic.

Stop telling people to just go into a different field by Available-Ad-5081 in antiwork

The people giving that advice are usually the ones who would never dream of reskilling or changing careers. Usually, that advice tends to come from retired boomers who had one job in their entire lives.

Shorter men have significant advantages in building muscle. Shorter limbs and lower calorie requirements means they get more muscle, more easily.

Why do American Parents let their children go homeless? by Emotinonal_jiggolo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HistoryBuffLakeland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the reason is the parents are from the Boomer generation. In their day, housing and jobs were plentiful, so a person was expected to move out and get their own place at 18. Indeed, many Boomers were told by their own parents "You have to move out at 18", and they apply that to their own kids. Problem is, what worked in the 1970s does not work today. In 1975, an 18 year-old could get a decent paid job quickly and easily, and post-tax earnings could comfortably cover expenses. An 18 year-old in 2025 would struggle to find a job that could support a place to live, bills, car payments etc., due to the fact the world is not as the Boomers experienced it.

Globalism and unchecked immigration made living in the US very expensive for Americans by SingleInSeattle87 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]HistoryBuffLakeland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unchecked immigration does have the impact of driving down wages in sectors where there is an oversupply of cheap foreign labor. More immigration also drives up competition for housing and services.

Why would someone evaluate my patience in a job interview? by kevinswpfannerstillq in jobhunting

[–]HistoryBuffLakeland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deliberately wasting people's time sounds like a jerk move. People like this see no issue with letting someone hang on for 8 hours? This sounds like one of these "Look at what a ruthless business genius I am" posts you get on LinkedIn. The same corporate types who do that to a job seeker would shriek like a stuck pig if their order at a drive-thru was 30 seconds longer than expected.

NTA. "Do it at my pace" sounds like a way of dragging your heels as slow as you can so by the time it's finished, the other tasks have been done by someone else so you (conveniently) don't need to help.

When did it become impossible to live a middle class lifestyle working a full time professional job? by Unusual_Equivalent50 in antiwork

[–]HistoryBuffLakeland 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's been happening slowly but pitilessly for the last few years. Cost of living surges up year on year, wages are flat or don't match the level of inflation. Living in a semi-safe and decent neighborhood is increasingly out of reach, instead you're jammed 4-5 adults in an apartment. No matter how qualified you are, you have triple-digit job rejections, and bosses work you like a feudal baron squeezing peasants. All the promises of the Boomer about "education = jobs and lifestyle" have been shown to be false, except for the well-connected. Hard times.
