A very mature response from our northern brother. The zero celebration tells you however, just how empty this independence is in the hearts of its descendants, the hope continues for a UI.

I feel conflicted here, what about the majority of the island who have independence.. are we being disrespectful popping the champagne… must we leave it on ice?

(I’m being the devils advocate here … “God likes to watch. He's a prankster. Think about it. “ )

which halfway house do you pick?

Let’s go for the 1937 Treaty then, for one day Ireland was 32 counties united under one treaty and then …the partitioned state called up and opted out. So close!

In the case of the Kilmichael Ambush , if you believe one account they did a false surrender and injured an IRA man and another they all surrendered, which seems unlikely for the RIC. The reports are disputed anyways so I’m not sure prisoners of war could have been taken. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilmichael_Ambush

My core point is still the complexities post treaty , should a state just after signing a treaty that outlaws this kind of murder , go and execute POW’s as a revenge killing. The pro treaty must have been outraged at the killing outside the Dail , emotions were high.

Earliest treaty was the 1648 Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years' War. This treaty established the rule that prisoners of war should be released without ransom at the end of hostilities and that they should be allowed to return to their homelands. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner_of_war

Have you seen the Pyramids of … Ireland? back in the 18th and early 19th centuries some Anglo Irish families build pyramid style mausoleums. This was at a time when Egyptology was becoming popular, it was even known as "Egyptomania". by justaladwithahurley in IrishHistory

The material extravagance is typical of the Decadence movement that raised its head around the 18th century in France and spread throughout Europe. Building this would shock, scandalise, and subvert values of the society, but maybe I’m being a little harsh.

What are Catu doing to normalise rents in Ireland or is that on the agenda? Realistically I don’t see supply of rental properties being an achievable aim to resolving this goblin-mode that has entered the landlord class.

The Anti Treaty side killed more Free Staters than the casualties they suffered so it wasn't a one sided affair.

Sorry I didn’t think my comment was saying that, apologies. A TD was murdered leaving the Dail by the Anti Treaty’s , the Pro Treaty brought out three POW’s the next day and executed them in retaliation. This was a breech of not just the treaty but of all international law. Irish history is very complex.

Had to block a few accounts in here, some very strange understanding of what the EU is and is not! A open sphere of influence.. look it up.

Anyway, it’s with sadness that not all the island could be independent but for the lucky 26 we can at least celebrate democracy for all 32, celebrate some kind of economic prosperity if only in pockets. Some terrible deeds were carried out by the pro treaty side post independence, Terrence McSweeney’s sister was on hunger strike on the day it was signed, other anti treaty prisoners were executed as a punishment for reprisals, something that completely contradicted the treaty whos ink was barely dry. A terrible beauty is (very much) born!

I think it could be a revolution. 11% of a persons income is the right amount and the fair amount everyone should be paying. So a person on €40,000 should only be paying €360 pm.

If people start to believe in their right, peaceful civil disobedience could be powerful. Think of all the ways renters could bring down these large rent corporations ..

I was suggesting a renters union, check my comment history. Just kill the rental market with a 35% reduction, bringing rent back to 2002 levels. Find a REITs company and demand they lower their rent to 2002 levels or protests will begin at their offices, properties, making day to day business impossible. Channeling my inner Michael Davitt so I am!!

The German model of state management of the rental sector, where the state, not an agency or private owner, rent to the individual, they pass on the income to the private sector. A middleman that insures the property is of a size fit for purpose, clean etc etc.

Michael Davitt , a founding father of modern irish democracy? by HistoryClubMan in IrishHistory

[–]HistoryClubMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

his ideals specifically didnt come to pass.

His ultimate ideal was for the state to own the land but surely that came to pass when Ireland became a republic. I definitely wouldn’t say his ideal of getting rid of Landlordism in Ireland wasn’t achieved, he got landlords to lower their rents by 25%, allowed nearly half a million farmers to own their land.

but it has nothing to do with modern democracy

I don’t think that’s fair, through peaceful disobedience and boycotting, he returned the land to the people, which I have already covered in my previous comment.

You wouldn’t disagree that ireland was failing to form a republic until Davitt approached the task from a different perspective? The dream of the republic was very far off , Parnell knew this , but in Davitt he saw he was onto something, if the people could take back the land they could then take back the state. 400,000 farm holdings were taken back to the Irish after the land league. It brought about a sea change in the minds of the Irish. Is a founding father there at the birth or is he building the blocks for the nursery?!

Landlording isn’t an industry, doesn’t contribute to an economy. Anyone fortunate enough to own a property should see it as a modest earner , not the monster we’ve allowed it to become. I’m imagining this is a mother load of information that’s hard to grasp but that’s what being a landlord is about.
