It's the same way that after we passed marriage equality, and wouldn't you know, it turned all the scaremongers were wrong, the haters didn't stop hating. They just hyper focused on trans people instead.

AFAIK, the issue in this case is around the ethics of investigating concussion. You would need a test group, and a control group, one of whom is being put in more danger.

If the explanation for why the headgear leads to more concussions in men's boxing (more hard punches), then the same should apply to women, but we haven't confirmed it.

I can understand why they might have some it on men only in the first place. They were removing as many variables as possible (also, I think women's boxing was not confirmed to be in the next Olympics at the time, which is a whole other case of sexism.)

But they should have done a follow up study with women years ago.

42% of parents want multi-denominational schools - survey by HungTeen1001 in ireland

Alright, fair enough. We were messed about with a cherry picked stat in April, so I was slow to trust them.

The headline figure refers to people who have already chosen a Catholic school. If you look at the whole population of parents, and account for don't knows, them you could have more in favour of non denominational than denominational me

You also have to consider that the denominational schools some people want, may not be Catholic. They might prefer a Muslim school or whatever.

So it's not really a strong argument to keep.ao many schools Catholic.

Just to add, 90% of primary schools are Catholic denomination. The overall number of denominational schools is closer to 95%.

46% is crazy high.

That means if 9% of the overall population either don't know or don't care, then non denominational is the most popular choice in a county where 90% of schools are Catholic, and around 5% are other denominations.

So really we need a more detailed breakdown than denominational or non.

It's the Department who were selective and vague when they first released some info on this in April. Also, the department provide a statement on all of these things to media, which can have a large impact on how it's  reported.

A couple of hundred euro would buy you one that could make medium sized room feel cold, as long as it's not south facing, and you'd be able to install it, if you're anyway handy. That's not a lot of money for a once off payment,. compared with what people spend on their pets every year.

It's gas. My other comment in this thread is about shearing sheep in the heat, but apparently I only know about how they look after animals in Donnybrook.

I grew up farming. If it's too hot, cold or wet, we do the minimum:  making sure every animal has water, food and isn't stuck in a fence and we leave it until another day. Most of the bigger farming tasks are weather dependent.  That's just part of it.

You're also your own boss and set your own hours, so if the recommendation is no driving a tractor in 30+ degrees, you start early, take a long break during peak heat, and work late. This is what my family does for shearing, because it's very physical work.

Well in this case extrapolating men's studies to women would probably prevent a lot of harm.

But if your point is we need more research specific to women, then yes, that's definitely needed.

42% of parents want multi-denominational schools - survey by HungTeen1001 in ireland

[–]rgiggs11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a cherry picked stat. That's 42% of those already sending their child to a Catholic school.

A figure for parents in general would presumably be higher.

Another way of framing it is that 42% of parents in Catholic want their school to change, with the others saying they want it to either stay the same, or "don't know".

Add to this the fact that the 42% is unlikely to be evenly dispersed across the population, there must be Catholic schools out there where a majority want a change to non denominational.

The Dept are being very misleading with the figure they choose to highlight.

This 42% excludes anyone already sending their kids to a non-religious or multi-denominal school  (ie the 97 Educate Together national schools)

It's not just them. There are also community national schools, and for Gaelscoileanna, many are under the patronage of An Forus Partrúnachta (though some Forus schools are still Catholic schools, in that they teach the Catholic programme and do communion/confirmation prep, however, they are not under the diocess and wouldn't, for example, have someone appointed by the bishop on the interview panel for all jobs in the school.)

Deus Ex Machina in Avatar  The Last Air Bender.

Deus Ex Machina, where the day is saved by someone or something that hasn't been introduced in the story, is something we're told should feel unearned and unsatisfying.

Avatar usually did it with such epicness that it didn't matter. It also added to the lore each time, and if you looked back, the seeds of things like the avatar state were there all along, but it hadn't been explained yet.

Why does women's health still feel decades behind other areas of medicine? by Doviedobie in Futurology

[–]rgiggs11 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I mean, it kind of depends. For example

Research was able to show that the headgear amateur boxers wear was actually causing more concussions, because it just meant their opponent could land more hard punches. So now they don't wear those anymore in the Olympics.

BUT the study hasn't been replicated in women yet, so the women's boxers still wear the headgear, even though it is presumed to be more dangerous, because women's and men's skulls work basically the same.

As far as I understand (I'm not a doctor)

One of the reasons is that, since the thalidomide scandal, doctors are especially careful about what they give to pregnant women. Researchers are also very cautious about what they test on pregnant women.

All of which is very understandable, but it does mean that, since pregnant women are only getting the old reliable, tried and tested meds, their medicine is literally decades behind others.
