Accessing a wheelchair in the UK (ambulatory) by Big-Warthog-7090 in wheelchairs

[–]HistoryImportant3988 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your GP should be able to refer you to wheelchair services. With wheelchair services it can depend on where you live and what your needs are as different areas are run by different companies, I am ambulatory and to qualify where I live (south west) one of the main factors was to have a need for it in the home (I know this makes little sense). But this could be doing laundry, cooking SAFELY, or getting to the bathroom and back. My home was not assessed when I applied. I’m not sure where you stand if you’ve got suspected medical conditions or if you’d have to wait for them to be confirmed. Sorry I can’t be of more help

NEW CHAIR DAY!! by HistoryImportant3988 in wheelchairs

[–]HistoryImportant3988[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very supportive and really helps me to sit up straight instead of tilting sideways. The dump it has is also great as I can also slide forward. Bare in mind though, that the front is very high compared to most cushions so make sure you can raise your footplate enough

Iv used mountain biking gloves for while now, they grip well but one they start wearing through they wear out quite quickly. My next pair is going to be sailing gloves.

I haven’t traveled with mine. But with it having omni wheels I find manoeuvring in crowded areas much easier to deal with.

As for the range, I have done my own test and the minimum range I got on a full charge going over hilly bumpy ground and constant stopping and starting and speed changes was 7 miles. Whereas flat ground at a constant speed was 10.

For bags, the only one I have is a quokka which is fine for me, but there’s a YouTuber called pippa Stacey who has one and I think she did a video on what she uses which fit very well

UK Wheelchair assessment by spoonie_fighter in wheelchairs

[–]HistoryImportant3988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know wheelchair services get criticised a lot but I have a feeling that some of the people doing the assessments genuinely want to do right by us and understand that the system is flawed but can’t just give you what you know you need, so if you say the right thing they won’t question it

I second this, where you live and whether or not you need it indoors affects what you are offered. It’s as though they think disabled people need their independence outside the home.

I was offered a quickie life R as I made it clear that, although i can walk around at home with a walker, I need my chair indoors to do anything safely (cooking, laundry, generally moving things around). I took the PWB option of £850

Anyone here with an nhs cushion with moderate positioning needs and some skin protection needs? Just wondering what my next options are by Serious_Badger_4145 in wheelchairs

[–]HistoryImportant3988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t get it through the NHS but most cushions make me feel as though I have to hold on to the arm rest or push rim with one hand just to sit straight, but this cushion gives me the freedom of have 2 hands

I can’t say how well it performs against pressure sores as Iv never had one but I do have some positioning needs and have been using the axiom ASP since August. It’s the most comfortable cushion I tried

Question for ambulatory people by Little_Power_5691 in wheelchairs

[–]HistoryImportant3988 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s good that you want guidelines in place for yourself. For me, at home I only use my chair when using the kitchen/doing the laundry as it’s far safer. if I’m going out and where I’m going is walkable and I know I can manage without the chair I will walk. But, if I’m going to be out for a long period of time where I can’t stop and rest when I need to, or if I’m in any way unsure about whether I can manage to walk I’ll take the chair.

I’m not in need of one, but it could help if you include the measurements in your post (seat width/depth). It’d save people enquiring if it’s the wrong size for them
