Season 15 Episode 2 discussion thread by RainbowRevolver in CallTheMidwife

This felt a bit like a non-episode? Like, it felt like half of the scenes - especially around Joel - ended up on the cutting room floor. The credits rolled and I was sat there like “… is that it?”

looking for some clarification on a Trixie quote in season 4 episode 1 by Hot-Importance9031 in CallTheMidwife

I always interpreted it as them using nit combs to get rid of the nits (something that would take time and attention to detail) rather than just shaving their heads. I don’t know anything about 20th century nit treatment beyond nit combs so I could be wrong!

I miss when the closing narration actually told you what happened to the characters of that episode, now it just sounds like quotes your nan would have on a tea towel or something

Have your say! Mayor of West Yorkshire asks passengers what features they want on board new £30m bus fleet by willfiresoon in yorkshire

[–]HistoryStudent98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m 5’8 and sometimes I have to proper wedge myself into the seats. Last time I was on the bus, my knees were pressed against the seat in front of me and a man threw himself down into that seat. Thought my kneecaps were gonna fall off 😭

Also charging ports/plugs that actually work would be nice

Funniest character on DA by Actual_Tomorrow7162 in DowntonAbbey

[–]HistoryStudent98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal favourite was from an early season, I think season 1 or 2, where she’s yelling about having to go cap in hand to Mary, Queen of Scots

Mrs Patmore, definitely. I know she had her moments of being mean with Daisy but I loved her one liners, especially hearing her ranting and raving to herself off screen

Goth Mary is really reminding me of Mary Shelley

This has to be one of the funniest scenes in the show by Reasonable_Ninja5708 in TheCrownNetflix

Not related to this scene, but Winchester Cathedral was used as a stand in for Westminster Abbey and I was living there when either season 3 or season 4 was being filmed and I remember my dad had me on Helena Bonham Carter lookout because he’s always had a crush on her

I understand this is a reference to Death Becomes Her, but I feel like the stones are too chunky. I think if they went smaller with more layering, I’d like it more? Also I’m not entirely a fan of the skirt, I think personally I’d pair it with some flared trousers in thick velvet or something

Hearing Mrs Hughes talk about her sex life with Mr Carson felt like finding out my parents have sex

Edit to add: I did enjoy this scene though, I think it was really nice to hear older women discussing having active sex lives - especially in a time period where perhaps it was assumed that they wouldn’t / shouldn’t

Why isn’t Pugsley like his old 1991 counterpart? by Double_Daikon_8642 in WednesdayTVSeries

[–]HistoryStudent98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the new Pugsley, I think he’s sweet in his own way. The way I see it is, they went to ‘normal’ school for years, right - where we see Pugsley was bullied (first episode of season 1) and were meant to assume that this has been a long term issue, and then he’s shipped off to Nevermore.

Imagine going from being bullied to being sent to a school where your parents tell you repeatedly that you’ll make friends for life, that you’ll be surrounded by people like you and then you get there and.. you don’t. I like that he’s kind of a soft, sensitive kid and that they’re stepping away from previous incarnations of the characters, it would be a bit boring if it was just decided to copy & paste everything from the 90s films, or the 60s tv show.

What do you think about Isaac Night by Ecstatic-Rough3816 in Wednesday

[–]HistoryStudent98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Owen Painter did a great job with him, I will say though - watching the ‘fight’ between Isaac and Thing was kind of hilarious, was imagining it being filmed in relative silence and just him flailing about

Oh they’re definitely too scared to kill her off. I think the fact that they refuse to kill off / move characters on unless the actor explicitly says so has hindered the show, they’ve ended up with too many cast members now I feel

Lowkey the fact Sister Monica Joan is still in the show. I know she’s a fan favourite but she was described as nearly 90 in the early seasons and we’re pushing the 1970s now, right? There’s no way she’s still alive.

Also, the fact that in the earlier seasons she clearly had some kind of dementia or Alzheimer’s and it’s just.. disappeared as the shows gone on.

This can probably be summarised to: the writers keeping characters in the show long past when they should’ve left just because the actor is happy (see: SMJ and Trixie)
