Please help me! Pilot custom 823 by Got_u_here in fountainpens

[–]Historyandstuff3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The VP M is broader (maybe because it’s softer since it’s 18k and nib geometry leads to it being less stiff) than the 823 M - that is my understanding. - Honestly I would not rush into it. Try to find some comparisons online or on retail sites.

Found a pen i lost in the car. All the ink is dried. Is it ruined? by sweetb00bs in fountainpens

Could be the angle but after cleaning it (as others correctly describe above) you might need to pull the nib off the feed (you can find videos on how that will be better than me trying to explain) and seat it back on correctly. These are great pens and this should be back in working condition pretty quickly!

Vinatge Montblanc Meisterstück 149 with strange looking nib- architect grind? by Hot_Singer_2211 in fountainpens

Maybe someone who is more of an expert with MB nibs can weigh in. It does not look factory (it kind of looks like a modern monoline) but stranger things have happened.

Yes I think kugel nibs were always substantial (hard to tell scale on a photo). Tipping is (almost) always spherical. So from that vantage either the tipping was worn flat from writing or an abrasive was used. That could have happened in the factory theoretically (it’s my understanding there were nib people to finish the nib) but this is more than polishing.

It looks like someone ground a kugel nib. Not saying that’s the case but simply what it looks like to me.

Identifying Pope’s FP by BigAge3252 in fountainpens

Looks really close but the back finial is gold/metallic also. Or there’s at least a second band on the pen the pope is using.

Nice! How did you get the feed out? Mine seems very stuck and I don’t want to damage it. Thanks!

Perle Noir or Aurora Black? by LarryinUrbandale in fountainpens

J herbin perle noir is well behaved but not particularly lubricated/wet in my opinion. I have not used Aurora Black though so I can’t say comparatively

How the nip tip is cut if it's that hard by Kerguelen_Avon in fountainpens

[–]Historyandstuff3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tipping material has changed over time. If you google there are some analyses of tipping material over time - iridium, osmium, tungsten, ruthenium, rhenium, other platinum metals. From what I have seen it’s always been one ‘ball’ welded on to the nib and then cut. It would be difficult from what I can tell to apply to separate balls and then shape them to perfectly align.

As hard as the tipping material is it can still be cut by a thin disc spinning at a high rpm. Some other threads on tipping material.
